The advance is the first step of the big ice dealers of the metropoile toward helping the puttic economize, for there is a vast shortage of the com- modity, and before summer ts over ice will doubtless soar to a price that hasn't been equalled in many years, So far e@ can be learned, there has not been @ general advance in the cost of {ce to families and other small consum- re, but dealers say one wifl be nece: sary before summer sets in. Hotels, restaurants, cafes and others who use great quantities of ice are now paylng 30 cents per hundred pounds. Normally, the price at this time of year te 2 cents and some years it has gone + as low as 17% cents. The upward move- ment in the price of the commodity was Inaugurated by the Knickerbocker Ice Company, Foster-Scott Company and other largo dealers and as soon as the news filtered through the trade, smaller dealers fell in step. William Bavier, Vice-President of the Kaiokerbocker, made a statement to The Evening World in which he declared the rep shortage amounts to fully one mil- lon tons. The floods up-State have had the effect of making the situation even more serious, as scores of ice houses have been under many feet of water and the ice stored in them is melting rapidly. In the case of one of the Al- bany houses of his company, said Mr. Bavier, thousands of tons of {ce floated way. Mr. Bavier said the only way ‘ew York can be sure of an adequate nly of ice all summer ts for con- 4.tw to take part untversal plan { momy. The young man showed remarkable confidence and facility, but displayed no especial gifts of interpretation and little sentiment. Hic programme inoluded the Bach-Lisst Prelude and fugue in A minor, Chopin's Sonata in B minor and compositions by Mendelssohn, Mosart, Schumann, Rach- maninoff and Lisat. A large audience was very friendly to him. The young man, while not born here, is, practically a native New Yorker and his talents have interested people of influence in the musical world. —_ NOTES OF THE THEATRES.
