Broadway, Fourth Avenue, Eighth to Tenth Stre=: Presents Tomorrow and Saturday, for the First Time in America Color Combinations of the Futurists Cubist Influence in Fashions In the New Paris Models for Spring In every age, the dress worn by the fashionable women of the day has expressed the spirit of the times. The classic draperies of the Greeks were the direct outcome of their noble attitude of thought; the fashions of the days of Louis XVI. expressed the frivolity and luxury and effeminacy of the times—and the fashions for Spring, 1913, are a revelation of the daring and freedom and power of the thought that is growing up around us in these days. Call it Cubism or Post Impressionism or Futurism or any name you will, the thing exists in every realm that art can touch. In some cases it is a striving for a newer and simpler way to express feeling; in others, it is an attempt to express the idea of power and motion; in every case, it is the effort after freedom from conventional ideals and conventional methods. Casting away so many rules results in a naive, primitive sort of art that is closely allied to the Japanese. It has been ridiculed; it has been misinterpreted and misunderstood. It has irritated, puzzled and disturbed. The old discussions that arose when Cezanne’s pictures were rejected by the Paris Salons have recommenced. But Cezanne is accepted as a standard today, and the men of the new school are in the position their master held when he first began to paint. Henry Matisse, who is one of the radicals in the new school, said: “An artist should above all express a Vision of Color the harmony of which corresponds to his feelings. That is what they have done—these creators of new fashions. Line, for the moment, drops back into a secondary place. Color is the vital thing. With the gown as a palette, the world has been painted over, intensified, vivified, made luminous, by putting into it dresses whieh express the color visions of the Modernists. Very largely these fashions have grown out of the pictures that are being painted today. It is the popular idea that women wear the gowns and artists put them on canvas; but the opposite is the fact. The gawns are inspired by the paintings. So we are shwoing them, like paintings in a frame. They will be posed in the Wanamaker Atditorium at half past 10 o'clock tn the morning, and at 2 o'clock and again at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. 3,000 Yards of Carpets!
