HE PUNCHES MEN INTO RESPECTING THE CHURCH The Rev. Arnold Pinchard Telis How He Convinces “Tough” Members. ‘The boxing game does not flourish in the parish of St. Jude's Church, Bir- mingham, Pngland, nowadays, because the pastor, the Rev. Arnold Pinchard, Mas eomewhat fost his punch. ‘The disting ed British clergyman, 'y, Who formerly taught the left hand jab ') Slong with the catechism, has just ar- rived in New York, or, rather, the out- lying territory—Brookiyn. He has yet to see America. Notwithstanding the fact that he at one time found a short eut to the hearts of the young men of hin congregation by demonstrations of the uppercut and a right hook to the Jaw, he !s not going to see or study ‘the American style of boxing. He ‘s one of the greatest orators of the Eng- sh pulpit and is here to conduct a Lenten mission at St. Paul's tn Brook- lyn and the Church of the Transfigura- tion in Manhattan, He {@ living at the pasto ot St. Paul's and was found Just after he had taken an automobile ride to Coney Island. “In seeking my views on the boxing “he said with an engaging smile, & few years Ii You gee,” he went on, still smiling, “I have— I guess you would call it—retired. Not that I won any welterweight champion- ebips and was willing to rest on my laurels, but, you know, when a man reaches the age of fifty he has lost a Jet of his boxing enthusiasm as well as his punch. It has been many years since I have had on the gloves. Oh, by the way"— I looked up rather curlously as the @lergyman fumbled among some papers on the huge Ifprary table, Failing to ind what he wanted, he ran his hand fa the pocket of his long black cloak end with it withdrew a beautiful silver cigarette case. HE ENJOYS SMOKING A CIG. ARETTE. “Won't you have a cigarette?” asked, and promptly Nghted or cif. was somewhat one not accustomed to the libraries of eurates or rectors. But that was not ail, After exhaling a wreath of smoke in the Janquid way that none but the fue devotee of the Turkish cigarette Knows how to appreciate, the renowned prelate smiled reminiscently and after a @ight pause adjusted a gold-rimmed monoole which seemed to dit in per- fectly with the surroundings. “Let me see your memorandum, wil! you?” he asked. On the slip of paper wen mothing more than & line telling et Dr. Pinchard'e unique record a ‘Rezxing parson. “That was a long time ago,” he aald. “Tm of the old school now. What was your object in teaching ezing to the young men of your con- @rogation?” “It was really to entertain them at first,” he explained. ‘And Inter I found that it hud so stimulated interest In the @eurch work of the young men that | kept it up. At any rate, I was well ale to take care of myself, and I taught the young men all that I knew. “You wee,” he went on, “I had a large Percentage of what you would call the reugher, or, maybe ‘tough,’ element in my congregation, and it was necessary that they be shown something wf physi- cal maniiness. In other words, I boxed to show them that because a man was ® priest of the church he was ot Necessarily @ weakling or @ mincom- he . At this Dr. Pinchard Iaughed heartily “a lot of people have that idea." TAUGHT HI8 FLOCK TO FIGHT Farr, “Those rough young fellows, took charge of the parish, had a way of fighting viciously by swinging a belt, on the end of which was a heavy brass ‘buckle. This was a dangerous weapon, and there was no law against carrying it because It was part of the belt wor frotind the walst.
