ENING WORLD, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1912. OWS BEAUTIFUL, HEAVY HAR esi 2 WE PROVE TE GENT OANDERIE and Describes Assailants. ' 8. TRYING TO CONNECT HICKEY WITH DEATH OF ERSE WOMAN Man Held as Slayer of Boy in Lakewood at Time of Turner Murder. SKILLED AS AN INVENTOR Protests His Innocence When Questioned in Cell—Awaits Extradition, Ht was learned to-day that J. Frank Bfickey, under arrest at Tom's River, N. J., charged with murdering seven- year-old Joseph Josephs in Lackawanna, N. J., was in Lakewood, N. J., at the time of the mysterious murder of Mra. Carrie Turner in that town on April 2, Wi. The Lakewood authorities are looking into the mystery of the killing of Mrs. Turner, which has never been solved, with a view to connecting Hickey with the crime. ‘When the Turner caso was mentioned to Hickey to-day he said he never was fn Lakewood in his life. The police have records showing that Hickey ar- rived in Lakewood two days before the killing of Mrs. Turner and departed two Gaye after the crime, He walked from ‘Takewood to the Keswick Home for In- ebriates on April 6 and it was at this home that he was arrested two days ego for the Lackawanna muner. ‘Ne character of fiction, however un- eanny © creation of the imagination, !1 more peculiar or complex than J. Frank epaile, quiet-mannered man, whose voles is as softly modulated as a skilled ‘erator, Hickey impresses you. By trade Be is & concrete foreman, but by his own ambition and effort he has become fe Mailled mechanical engineer, and ts the inventor of @ safety device to be used on railroad ewitch frogs. When ‘away from the mill, he drestes with taste, which he at times over- feaches through extravagance. Iie is “always well groomed, down to his care- fully manicured nails. ) The other Hickey, if he ta the man Diatrict-Attorney Wesley C. Dudley of Lackawanna unqualifiedly says he is, fs @ terrible, ferocious monster, sly, cunning, devoid of any human in- atinets, all the cruel brutality of his dual personality concentrated on abus- ing and killing young boys. CALMLY ASSERTS HIS CENCE IN HI8 CELL. Hiekey to-day, in ‘his cell in the Toms River Jail, quietly msisted on his inno- emte. He devoted most of his time to ‘reading engineering magazines. Chief of Pollce Ray Gilson and Dis- trict-Attorney Dudley of Lackawanna, Who questioned the prixoner tn his colt, emerged after the unsatisfactory cros- examination completly puzzled. Hickey, when taken into custody ny Sheriff Frank Tilton, was at work su- pervising the erection of @ concrete bridge on the grounds of the Keswick Colony, @ home for inebriates tn Whitings, N. J., where he had gone for treatment. The chameleon-ltke character of Hickey, the Lackawanna authorities say, 18 explained by one word—whis- key. Alcohol to him 1s an insidious demon-like ferocity, obliterating all hia good instincts and making him an ant+ mal, it is asserted, As soon as he re- covers @uMficiently from a carouse he makes a dash for some inebriate insti- tution and places himself under treat- ment. TO TRY TO CONNECT HIM WITH BOY’S MURDER HERE. When extadition papers arrive in Toma River, Hickey will be brought to) Police Headquarters in this city on his) way to Buffalo, and questioned by In- spector Faurot of the Detective Bureau, in an effort to connect him with the murder of @ newsboy, Michael Kruck, who was found strangled ten years ago in Central Park. | Hickey at that time was under aus. picton of the crime and was ques- tioned in prison in Buffalo, where he had been sent on the charge of intox!- cation, While still under the influence ot whiskey he had tafked with danger- ous familarity about the murder in New York. The New York police were notified, and a detective disguised as a prisoner was placed in the same cell with him. The influence of tho alco- hol wore away by the time the detec: | tive reached the buffalo prison and Hickey became again the mild, quiet, gentlemanly mechanical engineer, District-Attorney Dudley says he has three eye-witnesses who can identify the man who was maltreat- pung boy on the street a short time before the Joseph boy disappeared. Besides this there are countless postal cards and letters, unsigned, sent to George Joseph, the murdered boy's father; the Chiefs of Police in Lacka- wanna and Buffalo, and others. ‘The handwriting of these, says Dudley, is just like @ personal letter sent to Joseph Hoskyn, a foroman in the tac+ tory of the American Agricultural Com- pany in Buffalo, where Hickey had been employed, and with whom he was per- fecting his switch-frog invention, It was Hoskyn who first noticed the similarity of the handwriting. It was from these postals which to the finding of the Joseph boy's body last Saturday. — THEO. N. VAIL IN HOSPITAL. Theodore N.
