Forty years ago, long before the pres- emt mammoth concern had been con- ceived, Lyman G. Bloomingdale and his brother Joseph decided to establish a retail dry goods store In some uptown district. They rented a shop, twenty feet by sixty, in Third avenue at Fifty- sixth street and stocked it with an as- sortment of goods, At that time many predicted fatlure for the project, but the business was suc cessful from the first, and to-day there stands as a monument to the little store of two-score years ago one of the great- est retail establishments In the city— Bloomingdale Brothers—occupying the entire block bounded by Fifty-ninth street, Third avenue, Sixtieth street and Lexington avenue.
