HANDCUFFED TO THUG, POLICEMAN | RATS FOR LIFE Petrcean Broce Broderick Has Spec- tacular Battle With Joe Bish- up, Gunman and Gangster. That Polleeman William J. Broderick of the Madison street station {s alive to-day he owes only to @ quick eye and @ ready hand. For late last night, when he was manacted to one of the wickedest men in New York, in police estimation, Broderick had to fight for his Ife against @ revolver in the hands of his desperate prisoner, Joseph Bishop, a member of the Corlears Hook gang and @ youth of twenty-two who committed a murder when he was eleven years old, was the one with whom Policeman Bi battled in the dark of Front str night. He had hear ‘een thrown out of Front street earlier in the evening and, knowing the bad record of the gang leader, ‘he was preparing to murder the bar tender in revenge. So he ascoured the neighborhood of Cherry Hill, which was Bishop's rendezvous, until he saw his man slinking along by the side of a dark wall in front of No. 66 Front street. Broderick pounced on Bishop and had a dig revolver out of the thug’s pockat before his surprised prisoner could re- sist, ‘Then he clapped one manacia on him, locking the other about his own left wrist. PRISONER SUDDENLY FLASHED A SECOND REVOLVER. Broderick had not progressed far toward the Madison street jon when there was a sudden movement of his prisoner's free hand and a second gun flashed out of the side pocket of his coat. Bishop whirled about and pressed the muzzle of the revolver against the policeman’s head. Broderick ducked quickly and brought his nightstick down in @ paralyzing blow upon the hand that held the revolver. Then grimly and silently the two men, chained wrist to wrist, darkness. Bishop was trying to strangle the policeman with his free hand, while the policeman rained blow after blow with bis locust stick on his prisoner's head. Finally the heavy club won out, and Bishop went Iimp. But before the station-house was * reached he revived and began oace more to fight. Again the nightstick came into play. Bishop was badly beaten up be fore he reached the station. There when he was searched a thin-bladed dirk, sharp as a razor, was found in one of hie shoes. The thug had gone out “heeled” for murder. to-day on the double charge of carrying concealed weapons and assaulting an officer. Bishop n his criminal career in January, when he was only eleven old.
