—— ; $ } i] THE EVENING WORLD, *“Versiegelt’’ : Wins Success : at the Opera aaa Delightful New One-Act German Comic Opera Pleases a Capacity Au- dience—Johanna Gad- shi Surprises by Her Powers as a Comedian. BY SYLVESTER RAWLING.: rit) @ German comic in one act, by Leo ooh of Berlin, was presented @t the Metropolitan Opera House on G@aturday afternoon for the first time in America, Ite success was immediate. Whst probedly was the largest audl- énce of the year laughed with it from firet to last. The simple plot te trre- atatible, the musio—not as distinguished ae that in Mr. Wolf-Ferrari’s “La Donne Cunose”’—expresses it effective- @ cast is ideal, the dostumes are ly ting is charming. Mr. Gattl may be thanked for having added another opera to the repertory of the house. A canary, which rivalled his choicest songbirds both before and after the curtain rose, should surely be mide a member of the company. “Versiegelt” in English may be called “Sealed Up," or “Under Seal,” or “At- tached.” The comedy is an adaptation by Richard Batka and Mdee-Milo from Rauppach’s story. The soene is ‘the living room on the ground floor of the Widow Gertrud’s house in @ @mall German town in 188%. Her neigh- bor, the Widow Willmers, is to be sold out for unpaid taxes. Among the lat- ter's possessions is a wardrobe which @he values highly. This she persuades Gertrud to hold for her, Mrs, Wille ™mer’s son Bertel, the Town Clerk, and ‘Bieie, the Mayor's daughter, are in love, but the Mayor will not permit them to marry. The Mayor ts in love with Ger ‘ud. The one and only town con- qtable, Lampe, is a prying busybody, who knows everything that he ebouldn’t, bullies, accepts dribes and gets drunk. These are the principal characters. A SIMPLE PLOT, WITH AMUSING COMPLICATIONS. ‘The plot ts easy. The young people tell Gertrud how much the Mayor is in love with her, of nothing so fin ‘Mayor. Lampe, who has discovered the wardrobe in Gertrud’s house, comes yack as the Mayor is making love to her. She hides him in the wardrobe, which Lampe seals up. Then the young lovers come in and release “Papa,” only after, through a small opening in the wardrobe, he has signed @ paper per- mitting them to marry and promised a rich dowry, Meanwhile Gertrud has summoned the neighbors to find the Mayor in the wardrobe. As they ap- proach, the Mayor makes the young lovers take his place and hides in an- other room. The chorus having had its fill of laughing at the imprisoned Mayor, is on them when the you: re di The constaoie th is forced into the wardrobe and car off to the Widow Willmer's house. Th curtain falls upon the smack of kisses from the two pairs of fovers, This brief summary does not begin to @e justice to the amusing details of the action, and while the music is not aris- toeratic, it is felicitous and always fite the situation, Thero is no introduction, ‘The curtain rises with the opening bars of the orchestra. There: thon and music are one. The Alctous patter quartets that remind one | of Sir Arthur Sullivan. Im the firet | act there ts a love duet that recalis the comic opera of a generation ago before /the name spelled banality as it has so often since. The chorus is suggestive of the Montmartre ecene in Charpentier’s “Louise,” the watchman recalls his fellow workman in “Die Metatersinger.” But what of it? Mr. Blech evidently keops his eyes and ears open, as every composer should. He has the iillustri- ous example of Richard Wagner before nim. GADSKI SHOWS SKILL IN COMEDY. Johanna Gadski Widow Ger. trud disclosed gra comedian that were surprising. She was delicious in archness and piquancy. Her by-play was as varied as the situation, In the scene where the Mayor makes love to her ehe was irresistible. Could this be the commanding Brunnhilde and Isolde to whom we have patd tribute? one could but think. And how well she made her great voice fit into the smaller necessity! Her make-up nearly hid her identity and the lovely old fashioned sown she wore made hobbles and harem skirts seem the acme of ugliness. ANNA CASE AND ZIMBALIST DIVIDE CONCERT HONORS.’ Bfrem Zimbatist wae again the epe- cial soloist at the Metropolitan Opera House concert lest evening. A crowded house welcomed him, and not only en- Joyed his artistic playing, but received an additional treat in the aplendid sing» ing by Miss Amma Case of the “Ah! fore @ lui” aria from ‘Traviate.” It wae in fact an exceptional night, for every artist on the programme was com- Dolled to give an encore.
