Edmond Clement, At First Recital, Sings in English BY SYLVESTER RAWLING. DMOND CLEMENT, the disiin- ®uished French tenor, at his first ‘Fecdtal in Carnegic Hall yesterday afternoon, enlisted in the crusade for Aingteig in EheXen by presenting in the Henashél's “Morning Hymn,” «. Coombs'a “Her Rose” and Harriet Ware's “Wind and Lyre.” His diction, as it is m his own language, Fy tmpeccable. Not even the “th” him. The wornls flowed as Sméothiy as they might have done in French or Italian, and the grent atnit- emee of fashionadle people who heard him showed ite appreciation by sus- tained applause and many recalls, Ad- myers in the boxes threw him bouquets, which he picked up with the grace that Je bis own. It may not be assumed that these were meant to be tributes alto gether to his singing in English, but they could well have been. ‘The record must be prefaced by the statement that Mr. Clement was hoarse, although there was no announcement of hig disadiiity, Beyond that can follow nothing but praise of hia voice and his art. Such beautiful, sustained thread- Uke gossamer trawries in the pro- nouncement of his sungs are rare to hear. Barring a tendency to indulge in falsetto, to which the French have no-ob- jection, his singing was well-nigh per- fect. Especially liked of the numbers on his long programme were the “Hymne au Soleil’ by Alexander Georges; the “Chant de Trouvere,” by our own Kurt Schindler, Mr. Clement's most deft accompanist; Detussy's “Re mance,” and Diemer’s “La Cavatier,’ which had to be repeated. In Arcadet’ “Chanson Lorraine,” with the refrain “Oh, my Sabots!” Mr. Clement set con- cert tradition by the ears and ‘acted out the theme to the delight of every body, Most of these songs Mr. Clem- emt had to repeat, and others were from time to time demanded of him, but, at the end, the audience showed tts good breeding by letting him off with only one extra number, In a box was Alessandro Boni, eminent Italian tenor who only r demonstrated the sinzable quality, of | the English tongue and his own abil- fty to sing In tt. With Sembrich, Honci| and Clement showing how and why there should be singing in English, why do not our native artists wake up? “LA BOHEME” REPEATED WITH NIELSEN AND SMIRNOFF, “La Boheme" was repeated ai the Metropolitan Opera House last night ‘with two new people in the cast, before @ great audience. The Russan tenor, SMirnoff, whose Romeo was 0 disap- pointing, showed himself to much bet- ter advantage as Roioifo, Alice Niel- wen, from the Boston Opera Company, was an attractive Mim! Together they sang the Anale of the first act charm- ingly, carrying the high notes off the stage #0 successfully as.to arouse We jouse to genuine enthusiasm afier ine noisy and inartistic efforts of a claque had justly earned its indignation’ Bella Alem gave such added vivacity to her Masetta that she came perilous! to carrying off the stellar hono’ tue cast Were Scotti, always convincing as Marcello, and Didur, Dint-Corsi, De Segurola, Audisio and Missiano. The Fraternal Association of Musicians, of which Walker L. Hoger¢ is president, {# to give a dinner at Louis Martin's next Wedpesday evening at ich “Opera In English” ts to be cussed at length.
