Three American Women Singers Carry “Orpheus and Eurydice” Louise ents: Repeats Her Beautiful Imper- sonation of Orpheus— Marie Rappold, as Eurydice, Not Happily Cast—Alma Gluck in Two Characters. Anna Paviowa and Mikail Mordkin, Supported by a Strong Company, Give Their Delightful Russian Dances at the Metropolitan Opera House. BY er U VESTER RAWLING. Gluck’s lovely “Orpheus and Burrtles, ter many years of fence, was revived in Itallan at the Metropolitan Opera House last sea won it was acclaimed one of the best Productions ever made there. Presented ain last night, for the first time this feason, nearly all of its former success ‘Was repeated. Scenically there was no change. The picturesque grove beside the river with the Tomb of Eurydi the cavernous depths of the entrance te Hades with the flashing lights and changing colors an@ monstrous creeping things, and the Ideally beautiful Elysian Fields once more were cause for ama: ment as well as admiration. The spon- tanéous applause that could not be Feptrained when the curtain rose upon, the latter was excusable. Louise Homer's Eurydice remains a Hoble Impersonation, the best thing she hha ever done. Her lofty bearing, her classic poses, her manly stride and her lovely voice were united for conviction. ‘Whatever faults there were in her enunciation were those to which wo are accustomed. But Eurydice, which last Year Gadski interpreted so splendidly, ‘would seem to be unsuited to Marte Rappol. It ts not given to everybody ing Gluck's music. The style Is for- to our day and is not easy to ac- quire, Good voice alone is not suffictent It is only fair to say that the writer learned after the performance that the Brooklyn singer was really ill. For « time it was doubted behind the scenes whether could appear in the last ect. That Would excuse her falling to her second death several bars before he should have fallen and stop all fur- @her criticism of her performat Alma Gluck In Two Parti ‘Alma Gluck again was the Happy @pirit, singing in that naive way of hers that is so captivating in spite of the strange quality that her voice takes ‘on in the upper register. Because of the illness of Lenora Sparkes Miss Gluck also. was commandecred for Am: which she sang delightfully. But w ‘Mies Gluck, stand 80 stiffly on your little ehot-up platform and hold your hands eo awkwardly? It is a pleasure to point out that the leading parts in this opera mere filled by three American women. ‘The chorus sang admir was impressive solemnity at the tomb of Burydtce, the entrance to Hades the shar ta the plea of Orpheus was thrilling. The ballet, too, was excellent. Mar- celle Myrtille and her assistants did some beautiful posturing in the fan Flelds and danced most attractively in ‘the gardens of the Temple of Lo In| the dance of the Fairies they were weirdly fascinating, Toscanini led with fle usual electrifying command over all sand the orchestra played ex- jan Dancers Reappear. After the opera Anna Pavlowa and ail Mordkin, the accomplished | an dancers, supported by a more | than usually competent comp: who have just returned from a successful | tour, gave a ballet divertissement that was altogether charming. It was odd to nee the boxes still filled when the | dances began at a quarter past eleven an@ remain so until ne 4. As| for the rest of the crowded house, the final curtain made it start for two principals danced together to an Rdagio by Bletchman and to a valse caprice by Rubinstein, the latter new ‘Mme. When Clarence If. Mackay yesterdny saw the announcement from London that the Western Union Telegraph Company, with two submarine from the United States to jacquired control of the four submarine cables owned by the Anglo-American Telegraph Company, he said: “The only competition now left that of the Commercial Cable C pany on the ocean and the Postal 1 graph Company on the land. The Telephone Company has combined with our only competitor on the land and with our competitor on the ocean They have got together a vast com- bination and ft is clear that if the public wants competition the public must rely on the Postal Telegraph and the Commercial Cable. We shall not enter Into any combination, Neither shall we sell out. We hall continue |to compete and give the fastest service, “As I stated to the Legislative Com> mittee in New York last winter, the Postal Telegraph Co: ny will be the last competitor in land telegraphy. I would now add that the Commercial Cable Company will be the last com- petitor in ocean cabling. When that competition ceases there will only be a cholée between monopoly and gov- ernment ownership.” CUDAHY LEAVES $12,000,000.
