THE EVENING WORLD, WEDNESDAY. JUNE 17. 1908. HEARD FIREBUG AT WORK, THOUGHT HIM A BURGLAR So Cohen Locked His Doors, and Flames in Hall Got a Good Start. 450 LIVES WERE IN PERIL. | Second Attempt Made to Burn Big Stanton Street Tene- ment House. Frank Cohen, who lives on the top Moor of the five-story tenement-house, Nos. 202-204 Stanton street, and who has @ fruit and soda water stand at Stanton and Ridge streets, closed up shop at 2.50 A. M. to-day, and went to his rooms. He was just getting ready| for sleep when he heard some one strik- fng matches in the hallway. Cohen, having heard a lot about burglars, locked Als door, he later told the police. About the same time Mrs. Rachel Roth, fwtho occupies one of the four apart- ments on the top floor, and who was attending @ sick child, heard a crack- Aing that she recognized. Nothing @teckled like that except flames, she argued, and she began to scream. Cohen then unlocked his door and fan to the hallway, to be driven back by emoke and flames. The next in- stant Policeman Clarke, of the Union Market station, came bounding up the stairs telling the frightened tenants to get out, “And eet out quick,” he added. 5 ‘The man who set fire to the ten- ement had intended making a good Job of it. He had scattered the stair ways and halls with kerosene and benzine from the cellar to the roof. When the ofl was properly distri- buted the incendiary had lighted fires n the cellar stairs and on each turn} f the stairs up to the top floor. The fires made it impossible for the families on the upper floors to get to the atreet by the stairs,“or for the per-| sons on the lower floors to get to the| roof. The policemen and some of the ten- ants who did not take to the fire-/| escape and there yell with all the power 1 | | | lungs afforded attacked the fires, ana when the engines came rattling up tne| danger was over, On theNtop floor, in the hall, te Police found an empty half- sal demijohn which had contained benzine. It was taken to the station-house, anc an effort will be made to trace 1 ownership.
