Regan, proprietor of the Knickerbocker Hotel, received the sur- | prise of his life last night. After per- | sonally attending to the details of a/ inner to twenty-five, which was to} take piace under his hostelry roof, pre- | |sumably in honor of A. J. Levy, who | is soon to be marfled, he discovered at |the tast moment that the dinner was | really a graceful function designed to celebrate his own departure for Europe to-morrow. The chefs were mysteriously secretive in the preparation of the designed and an air of mystery accom- @ operations of the attendants, but still Boniface Regan did not aus- pect. Fake menu cards were brought into the banquet hall, and Mr. Regan saw that these, the Inst detail, were properly placed at the plate of each in- tended guest. Then he left satisfied. ‘When @ spurious message summoned ‘nim to the banquet hall later he found twenty-five of hie friends seated at the table and each rose with a cheer for | him. There was a floral chalr marked “Regan, Good Luck.” and » floral ship rose from the centre of the board wit golden streamers reading “Bon Voy- age.” Beneath was a sugar model of | the Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, on whic! Mr. Regan and his family are to sail. Then one of the substituted menu cards was shown to Mr. Regan, and these | read: “Dinner tendered to’ Mr. James B. Regan by his friends on the eve of his departure for Europe.” Light dawned on Regan as he was forced In- | to the floral clair and became the chief | Buest of the evening.
