Beethoven Cycle Ends as A Memorial and a Festival a Unusual Demonstration in Carnegie Hall as the New York’s Symphony Society’s Concerts Close—The House Packed—Many Turned Away. With the mphony Soctety’s Beethoven cycle which had been Ietened te in almost breathless silence, thore was a tumult of acclaim. Thon there was handed to Mx Damrosch a huge wreath. As he Dlaced ft about the bust of Beethoven that was upon the staga, all the musi- dans and singers rose in reverence. The @atienve caught the inspiration and !n large numbers also rose. It wes some minutes before the applause ceased and the house resumed a normal aspect. At the close of the concert a wreath ‘wes vresented to Mr. Damrosch. The orchestra satuted him with a fanfare, end again the audience caught the spirit of the occasion, stending every one in Tete place, and applauding enthusiast!- ally for some time before starting for bome, “Choral Symphony” Well Played. ‘The concert was becun with the beau- G@ful skxw movement from the string q@wartet ‘In F, which put the hearers in ‘@ properly receptive mood for the “Choral Symphony,” as the En-lish oa!l tiie qreatest of all symphonies, thut ends with the stupendous chorale finale to Schiller's “Ode to Joy.” In this the erohestra had the assistance of Jomell Mary Lansing, Reed Miller.
