The first shock, at 12.34 o'clock, coast time, was not severe, Another followed at 12.40 o’clock so sharp and violent as to create the fear that this city was to repeat the experience of San Francisco. = As it was the noon hour, the stores and office buildings were pretty well deserted, but there were enormous crowds about the newspaper bulletin boards and teleoraph offices weiting tor the latest earthquake news. The sudden rocking of the cround rendered everybody speechless for a moment. Then the overwrought nerves of the populace had an inning. RUSHED TO STREET IN PANIC, Thousands of people poured out of their houses through doors and windows in- diseriminately. Clerks rushed out of stcres and proprietors followed them, manufac- turing plants sussended. Teleoraph operators in both offices deserted ‘their instruments after sending preliminary word of the visitation to the outside world. For a time it appeared as though every building in the city would be shaken to the ground. The shocks diminished in intensity until 1.45 o’clock, when the telegraph operators went back to their keys. But business in general was not resumed for the rest of the day. The city is in a panic of terror, fearing a recurrence of the earth tremors to-night.
