WASHINGTON, March 2%,—Bvidence in rebuttal of the last testimony taken fn the case against Senator Smoot, of Utah, was presented to the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections ‘to-day. The first witness was Robert J. @hields, of Salt Lake, general sales egent of the Inland Crystal Salt Com- any, the president of which 1s Joseph Smith, tho head of the Mormon Church. ‘Mr. Shields is a Gentile and never has been a member of the Mormon Church. ‘He was recalled to refute the testt- mony of C. A. Smurthwaite, which was to the effect that the Mormon Church was so actively engaged in the salt business as to gain a control amounting to a monopoly amd that he (Smurth- waite) had been excommunicated be- eause he would not consent to be driven put of a business which rivalied a Church tndustry. The witness said that Smurthwaite had sent representatives and afterward ealled himself, to try to get the Inland Crystal Company ta buy the Beck Salt Company, in which Smurthwatte held the majority of stock.
