March 3.— NBleven men were killed in an explosion of gas in the shaft of the Century Coal Compary, at Century, a small mining town fifty miles south of Fairmont, on the Belington and Buckhannon branch | ‘of the Baltimore and Onio Railroad, Ten others are still missing. Beventy-five miners were at work {n the colliery at the time of the crash. The Century mine, which is owned by yw Bros., of Baltimore, is one of the largest independent operations in North- ern West Virginia. More than 250 men are employed daily in the shaft, and had th> explosion been an hour earlier the loss of life ave been appallirg.
