B SPORTING THE WORTD: MONDAY EVENING, MARCH 82, 1906. - NEWS AND COMMENT «# # # Straight Queensberry Rules— Fight All the Time—That Suits Nelson and McGovertr Too, ILLY NOLAN, Battling Nelson's manager, has evidently deter mined that Bat shall have every second of the six rounds to fight In. He doesn't want clinching to take any time out. or the referee to “butt in” and save Terry in the mix-ups. Nolan will demand the ‘following term: ‘The fight will be coverned by straleht Queensberry ruies, not the usual Phila- a@deiphia substitute. The men will fight themselves free from the clinches, hitting and protect- ing themselves at all times. ‘They will break at the order of the referee, but that official must not lay @ hand on elthcr man. If either fighter repeatedly refuses to break. the referee must disqualify him. In event of a khockdown the man who delivers {!t must retire to his cor- ner until the count {s finished or the man knocked down gets to his feet. The referee will not count. He ts to watch the man who is standing. The counting will be done by an official timekeener, who will stand at the edge of the platform with the timekeepers of the two fighters beside him to sco that he counts fairly. The timekeeper counts the seconds from a watch. The men are to be in the ring at 10 o'clock sharp, and to weigh in at five minutes vast: then to dress a. sd @ge thelr harids in the ting with band: Wel into bo th the referee. The weet is! eo Ught-weight Umit. ATTLING NELSON has had great crowds at his training quarters daily, and has made such an {m- pression that very few in Philadelphia are willing to bet on McGovern. There will be plenty of McGovern money from New York and Brooklyn, however, and the betting at the last moment will be fast. AT wound up his hard work Satur- day. Yesterday he only went out on the road. To-day he will play 1 roko and run a bit to keep his wind good and avold putting on weight. He is down to 181% pounds. Nelson {s al- ways confident of winning. Yesterday he paid to a visitor: “I have been doing @ lot of three-round boxing lately, and it has made me faster. I'll cut out the Pace with McGovern, and I think I'll a few people who saw me with Abe Attell here a year ago, P along the Harlem Terry Mc- Govern has been doing his final stunts, Terry has cut out the boxing. The welght is easy for him. He never fought 80 heavy before, Terry eays he is “right,” and the certainly Jooks it. He is full of life, and seems happy over the near approach of the fight. Hundreds have taken in Terry's camp every day. It has been like old times for the little Brooklyn champion, Terry is bigger than ever, fpt he has keept as much weight as he Could. He 4a a little slower, perhaps, than was ‘two or Years ago, But ‘hefoan hit just as hard. “He hasn't lost the punch, ‘And he hasn't lost any of the fighting spirit either. Win or lose he will tear into Neleon like an infuriated wildcat, ‘Terry looks good. The only question in everybody's mind is whether or not he can take a blow on the chin without leet as in the old days, He lly dazed by Tommy Murphy's penches, Terry says he was weak then, not half so good and strong as he {8 nOW. Maybe Terry knows—maybe he doesn't, Only the fight can tell, OOKING over the rules that have been turned out by Mr. Nolan, it seems to me that they sult McGovern fully as well as they do Nelson, If Terry manages to land a knockout he will be light-weight cham- plon. He wants every second of the ume free for fighting. ‘Then, too. Terry 1s a natural infighter. He al- ‘ways wants bo fight In the clinches and breakaways. He never holds. When the other fellow clinches, Terry keeps pound.ng away at the body with bot ands. I remember very well how he , did that to one Billy Maynard, whom he knocked out in four rounds’ in chis same ring three years ago. Maynard wanted to hug and hold on, but every poy be tried it Terry fought himself ree, AS for enforcing the rule that the deliverer of a knockdown must retire to his corner during a count, that is | places, "WHOEVER LANDS A KNOCKDOWN Witt HAVE To HIKE FOR, HIS CORNER & @ THATS A NEW ONE > BROOKLYN PLAYERS LEAVE FOR THE SOUTH Headed by Manager Patsy Donovan, They Depart for | Columbia, S.
