NAT GOODWIN DISGUISED BY BEARD AND SEA LEGS Clad in Skipper’s Togs, Comedian Comes Rolling In on Lyceum Stage in “The Beauty and the Barge,’’ but Steam Yacht Is More His Style. SCENE IN “BEAUTY AND THE BARGE.” TE disguise that began by dis I nitying “Nat” into N. ©. Goodf win was completed last night when the comedian put on a@ hoary wig and whiskers and, with a well- rehearsed pair of sea legs, came roll- ing on the Lyceum stage as the amor ous skipper of the Heart and Hand in “Beauty and the Barge.” His name on the programme was the only clue to bis identity. Otherwise, his closest friend would not have recognised him. And here arises a serious questions Are the countless admirers of Mr. Goodwin satisfied to have him dis- guised? Only the bomoffice ean an-4 ewer that. For a great many years Mr. Good- win'e plain, unadorned face hes been one of his most valuebe asscts. The firet glimpse of it has always been the signal for e@ glad welcome Audiences, too, have revelled in his unalloyed Americanism. Both are thrown over board in “Beauty and the Barge.” SlowMoving as the Barge. A more typically Hngiish drematic craft than this three-act farce by W. W. Jacobs and Louis N. Parker bas never quarantine. The piece is not quite comprehensible, and it is as as the barge itself. The lines take a Grol turn every now and then, and many of the characters are what wo commoniy call “quaint.” The late James A. Herne put thelr Amert- can equivalents into “Shove Acres” and “Gag Harbor,” and we accented them. But it {s doubtful whether Lon- Gon would have understood them. That same doubt applies to the present case, ‘The story in itself can hardly be ex- pected to hold the imtesest of en Amer- foan audience. Its types ave its only eaivation To escape an undesirable suitor Hthel Smedley decides to run away from home and mother and a nolaily disa- greeable father, Capt. Her presence there piques the portly landlady who presides at the bar, She ts sweet on the gay old sea-dog and throws lumps of sugar on him to distract his interview with Bthe.
