BY ROBERT EDGREN. It begins to appear likely that the double-barrelled championship battle between Bob Fitzsimmons and Philadelphia Jack O’Brien will come off after all. ‘The money being posted to-day, nothing remains but to arrange the minor details of the fight for the middle-wolght and light-heavyweight titles and choose the battleground, Treat for Spectators. It ian't often that fight followers have a chance to see two men fight for championships of two classes in the game ring at the same time, Fitz and O'Brien fought once before, in Philadelphia last July, Fitz didn’t rain a day for that fight. for he made the mistake of underestimating O'Brien's cleverness and fighting abil- ity, He went into the ring out of condition, and It took him three rounds to wet Into a fighting humor. During the first three rounds O'Brien punched Fitz ae fast as he vould let the blows go. He landed every known blow —all of the fifty-seven varieties—and a few new ones that he made up espe- clally for the occasion, During that three rounds O'Brien looked like the fastest and cleverest boxer that ever danced about a padded ring, He started the ball rolling by landing a fierce hook fainmoamd Fitz simmons's chin, With a Jim Jeffords that punch would have been a knockout, But Fitz can take it. He staggered a little, grinned, and came back for more, He got more—more aplenty, There was hardly a spot above the belt on Fitz- simmons’s anatomy that didn't stop one or two of O'Brien's jabs or hooks, Old Fox Woke Up, Then In the fourth round the old fox of the ring began sending In deliberate rights and lefts that nearly lifted Phil- *Esperance Wreath of Iv Mathtide . Fits chased him, tear- Ing into the solar plexus, A clip on the chin in the sixth round, alded by a couple of hard wallops in the body, made O'Brien stagwer like @ collector of higi alls. Once he went down, but rou6 again In time, As Fitz scuffied in Once more with a grin the bell nang. it wae a lucky ring for Jack, and it was doubly lucky forith¢yeason that It came nearly half a mifmute before the right- fu} end of the round, The timekeeper pulled the cord ‘o save O'Brien from a knockout, That is the way the last battle went. ‘This one that {s coming may be fought in an entirely different manner. In the first place It will be for twenty rounds instead of six, and O'Brien will not be in 60 much of a hurry, He will be nore willing to stand off and jab unul Ae Rots a good opening. But the twenty- Fround Kaine is a gooil one for Fitzsimmons, too. He can tight fast In a six-round bout, but It ‘always fakes him about three rounds to yet Warmed up. No one was struck by the bul- lets, but half a dozen men were 80 badly beaten that they had to be car- tled away by thelr friends, The police didn’t put In an appearance, The principals in the fight were Eddie Kain, of Brooklyn, and Jimmy O'Brien, of Manhattan. At least 500 sports from this city were expected at the ring aide, but only 30 showed up, This wasn't considered a lucrative enough crowd to warrant @ finish fight, so when the sports de- clined to dig for an extra contribution the principals announced that they would fight but six rounds, They prom- {sed, however, to do their best to finish the fight in that time, And they did, One McDonald refereed the fight.
