eee NICKEY? XO, SAYS GRAN NA He’s_a Gentle and Harmless Terrier, She Asserts, and No Court Summonses Can Make Her Give Him Up. BITE THE EULER BOY? WHY, THE IDEA’S ABSURD. But Eddie Euler’s Papa Is Boil- Ing with Anger and Now Threatens to Despatch the “Pup” Summarily on Sight. Mount Vernon has many dogs. Like every town, she has dogs with pedigrees and just the common, everyday tn- can variety. Some of her dogs have won blue ribbons and red ribbons and white ribbons at Madison Square ken- nel shows and been talked about by the fashionable set, but never has she owned a dog that has caused as much talk within her own boundaries as “Nickey” French. “Nickey” has a pedigree. He is a Beotch terrier, with hair that falls in a tymble of silvery waves from his sturdy little back down to the toes’ of his four strong legs. "Nick also wears a bang, from the cracks of which two brown eyes peer out at the rest of the world. "Nickey" belongs to the grand- fon of Mrs, Willlam French. Hoe !s a New York dog, but his master broke up housekeeping in the spring and gran'ma has been keeping him ever since. A week ago little four-year-old Eddie Euler, who lives in North Seventh ave- nue, a few doors away from “Nicke: home, ran to his mother, yelling at t top of his voice that “Gran’ma Krench's poodle has bited me.” When Eddie's father got home from New York that night he decided that the only thing to do was to kill “Nickey.” He started out with a shotgun, but he didn't come across the dog. The next day he didn’t go ta New York, but stayed home and demanded that the Police Department of Mount Vernon go to “Nickey's” house, rou. him out and hang him. The Chief sald he couldn't do that, and passed Euler along to Judge Simpson, of Special Sessions, The Judge issued a summons directing Gran'ma French to put “Nickey” out of the way forthwith. An order of that kind has been written every day since then, but “Nickey” still survives, and when Euler reappeared before Judge Simpson and demanded a final order of execution the Judge said he had been out fishing and his}arms were so sunburned he couldn't write. “Nickey” in Retirement, No one outside of the French family has been able to get a sight of “Nickey’’ since the day the Hulers went tho warpath, but an Evening World reporter saw him and had a long talk with His Scotch Terrtership and also with Gran'ma French. It has been sald that “Nickey” lias been 80 scared gince the first order of execution was issued that he hasn't moved from under Gran'ma French's big walnut bedstead. His New York visitor found him in the kitchen eating oatmeal and} " milk, Just at that moment Gr. stepped in front of “Nicke; her capacious skirts out on "ma French, and pulled each side go that the “loorway wus entirely blocked, “Be you a policeman?” she asked anxiously, ‘A reporter man? Well, for the Ian's sake. You don't mean tu tell me you come all the way up from York to see “Nickey” French! Well, for the lan'’s sake! You just come here, ‘Nickey,’ and, show thie reporter man from New York that you ain't as bad inted."" *s'' oatmeal and milk were tasting pretty good about that time and Gran’ma French had to yank him away from the meal by the nape of his neck, “Now, Mr. Reporter, you put your finger in “Nickey's" mouth and you see it ‘he bites.” “Nickey” didn't bite, and when he saw his mistress remove hix plate of oat- meal he crawled up into his visitor's lap and smuggled down contentedly. Bhis Dog Doesn't Bite. “There now, you see ‘Nickey's' not vicious, I don't mean to be disrespect~ ful to no court, but ‘Nickey’ didn't Just bite that Euler boy, and he's goin’ to stay under my bed or any- | Wheres else in this house thtt sults Bim, and when I get done boardin’ him for the summer he's going back to my gran’soh for the winter. “Say, don't you go and put my name tn the paper, but just you put this In: “There's a whole lot of people in Mount Vernon who don't know how to mind their own business, and they don't live further away from here than I could throw ‘Nickey’ by the nind leg.’ “Bay, have you been to the Eulers?” and Gran'ma French's voice sank to a whisper with the question, “No?
