GUS MESSAGE, “SW BRADSHAWS: Marriage of Helen Barnette to New York Broker Was Not to | ‘Have Taken Place Yesterday, Relatives Say. CONSIDERABLE MYSTERY ~~ SURROUNDS WHOLE AFFAIR. Prospective Bride and Mother Come Here in Response to Telegram, Pronounced to Be Forgery. The relatives of Joseph Paul Brad- shaw, the young broker, who, accord- ing to despatches from Franklin, Pa., was to have been married to Miss Helen Barnette, of that city, yesterday, 4 but failed to appear, a telegram saying . he was ill being received instead, vig- 5 orounly denied to-day that any wedding if had been arranged for Tuesday, al- ti though they admitted that an engage- ment existed between the young man and Miss Barnette. They furthermore lenounced the telegram saying he was ill, which brought Miss Barnette, her mother and brother to thin city on a special train, as a forgery, although the name of Percy Bradshaw, the pros- pective bridegroom's brother, was signed to it. There is a good deal of mystery sur- a rounding the entire matter, and it looks | ag thongh there must have been a mis- i) understanding somewhere. There {s lit- ve tle doubt that the society follcof Frank- Fe lin had preparcd themselves for the wedding, and that Miss Barnette and ‘her people expected one. On the other hand, the relatives of young Mr, Brad- shaw declare emphatically that they knew nothing of a wedding being ar- ranged, although they do say that they expect one sooner or later. It was sald by his father to-day that he met Misa Barnette and her mother and brother when they arrived hero yesterday, ‘pent the day and the evening with them and would spend most, of the day In thelr company. Mr. Bradshaw, who Is associated with the firm of Clark, & Co., of No, 59 Wall street, did “not appear at that office to-day. ‘The story which came to New York from Franklin to-day is that last Mon- day a girl friend of Miss Barnette gave dinner in honor of her approaching ‘martiige to which Mr. Bradshaw was Sra 5 Invited, He failed to appear, Late that same-night, the story runs, a telegram was received signed with name of Percy Pradshaw, stating that Joseph Bradshaw was {Il and asking Miss Bar- » Bette to come to him. Miss Barnette afd her mother and brother did come, chartering a special (rain for the pur- pose, and on thelr arrival here were in- formed that Mr. Bradshaw was not iil and that his brother hud never sent any such telegram, What other explanations there were does not appear, but while despatches from Franklin say that the friends of the cere- the young woman expected mony to occur at noon yesterday at the locaé Episcopal church, and that a special car was sidetracked at Franklin Jor use on the boneymoon, Mr, Brad- shaw’s relatives say it-is all untrue.
