~~ FOR HANNAH ELS agistrate Ommen and Two Assist- ant District-Attorneys Visit Platt’s ._ Home To-night and Urge Him to Make Complaint Against. Woman. Whether or not Mrs. Hannah Elias is to be <rrested on a criminal complaint of blackmail depends entirely on the outcome of a conference | “which is to be held to-night at the esitence of John R. Platt, the aged: man who claims to have yielded nearly $700,000 to her threats of ex- . posure. ~ Assistant District-Attorneys Lord and Kernochan, acting under in- Structions from District-Attorney Jerome, are to meet Magistrate Om- amen and Lyman G. Warren, counsel for Mr, Platt, at the Plaza Hotel at 8 o'clock to-night. WILL ASK HIM TO SIGN AFFIDAVIT. | They will then proceed to Mr. Platt's home, No. 7 Bast Fitty-fourth | street, where a last effort will be made to induce the old man to make a) criminal complaint against the woman, so that she may be arrested. So| far Platt has been unwilling to take this step. He fears the humiliating | exposures which will follow a criminal investigation into his relations with the woman, and also fears that his chances of recovering his money wiil not be so good if he takes this step. | _ © “Magistrate Ommen goes along so that a warrant may be Issued at once it, Mr, Platt can be induced to prosecute. The warrant wiil be drawn in » the Platt house and turned: over to county detectives, who will ke in wait-| ing, and it will be served forthwith. Mr. Jerome said this afternoon that he would act speedily if he gets the co-operation of the aged victim of the negress, and before morning the notorious woman may be in prison, ALL READY TO LEAVE. : .. CHEFOO, June 7.—That the Japanese made a combined sea and land attack upon Port Arthur yesterday appears to be confirmed from several sources, although nothing has been Icarned as to the result of it. One of Nows of the attack comes from the Associated Press correspondent at TVengchow, on Sintung Peninsula, from steamers that passed far out from Port Arthur last night, and from the crew of a Chinese junk, which has just arrived from a point three miles south of Port Dalny. The junk sailed at 7 o'clock on Monday morning. At that hour heavy firing was heard on land, north of Port Arthur. The sound Increased in volume through the morning and those on the junk heard it and saw great clouds of smoke until they passed out of sight and hearing at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. SEA FIGHT ALI, NIGHT. The suppostion is that the Japanese army made a desperate attack upon the stronghold from the land side and that the wattle-ships came as ciose as they dared at the same time in the hope of decoying the Rus- sian squadron out of the shelter of the land batteries, There Is ground for the belief that the sea fight lasted nearly all of Monday night.
