— ah > BANDITS PLAN TO RAID “L" ROAD Police at Stations on Third Ave- nue Line as Train Stopped to Receive Receints for Past 1 Twenty-four Hours. HEADQUARTERS GOT TIP OF PROPOSED HOLD-UP. Scheme Said to Have Been Con- ceived by Band of Organized Crooks from the West Now in the City. Warned through some anonymous @ource that the money train on the ‘Third avenue elevated railroad was to be held uo between Harlem and the Battery, policemen were at every €le- vated station of the Third avenue el- evated to-day until the money-laden ears had passed, How tho warning was received at Po- Uce Headquarters Is one of the secrets carefully guarded. It is said that the warning came yesterday, and was thought so significant by Police Com- niasioner McAdoo and his subordinates that he issued a typewritten statement to the captain of every precinct in Manhattan along the ‘Third ayenue “Li” line. Train Well Known. This statement was strictly confiden- tial, and every captain was warned that he must assign his most careful men to the stations, and that these men should under no consideration let any one know what their presence In the stations meant. The Commissioner was especially anxious that no details of the planned hold-up be made public either before or after the guard had been set, At the offices of the Elevated Rall- rond Company every effort was made to keep secret the plans of the thieves. It was learned, however, that the plan of robbery was conceived by a gang of Western bandits who are now In New York. Every detail had been ar- ranged for the robbery. It was ex- pected to take place when the train pulled up at the Ninety-nfnth street station on the down-town side, when the car would have been well filled with the receipts for the past twenty- four hours. Plan of Desperadoes. ‘The bandits were, so it ts sald, to have thade their way to the station, and when the train pulled in—{t w due there about 3.25 A. M.—they w to overpower the guards, cover the engineer and firemen with their pis- tols and loot the train, At every station along the line of road there were policemen and plain- clathes men. The policemen were mostly the men who recently were assigned to duty along the elevated stations by Commirsicner McAdoo, With them, but standing on thi from the Central OMice and precinct de- tectives In plain clothes. An official of the police department who refused to have his nume used re- luctantly admitted that the information recelved by The Evening World wae vorrect, “I will say that the plans of these Western crooks were made in a hurry, but they were complete. If those ban- Aits had ever attempted to carry sheir plans they would ave been the nowt surprised bandits that ever came -o, this or any other city. ur first intimation was that the tanto hold the train would be attempted in the Bronx, where it runs through some sparseiy settled districts, Later, howev we learned that the vandits had changed their plans, be- ieving that they could get more inoney uy & greater risk. “Our information that there was to be an attempted train robbery comes from the most authoritative source, We may have misinfori but I'don't think we were." “Something Doing,” Said Pollce.
