vid WOMAN CHAMPION BEEFSTEAK EATER drs. George Schaefer Said to Have Devoured Eleven and Three-quarter Pounds of Por- terhouse in 55 Minutes. WASHED DOWN BY OLD ALE AND CHAMPAGNE PUNCH. Contest Held at Harlem Occi-| _ dental Club Dinner, Cost $1,000—Nine Women Were Left in Final Contest. It takes more than a mere trifle Mke eleven and three-quarter pounds ef good porterhouse steak to put Mrs. George Schaefer out of business. Thursday night, at the beefsteak fiinner of the Harlem Occidental Club fo the ladies of the organization, Mrs. Behaefer won the championship for sonsuming the largest quantity of steak in the shortest time Mmit. The record was cleyen and three-quarter pounds in fifty-five minutes. But the eating of the steak was a bagatelle to Mrs. Schaefer. Her hus- band, George Schaefer, who once ran for Alderman of the district, and who has ever since borne the honorary title, ts a butcher by profession, and ft was, in fact, from the meat mar. ‘ket’ over which he presides that the wteaks and chops for the fenst were obtained. Mr. Schaefer is the oMctal Butcher of the club; so, possibly, be- eause of long practice and on account ‘ef a full realization of the worth and excellence of the meat set before her, Mrs, Schaefer was enabled to out- ‘strip her companions. But, to do the lady full justice, it must be stated that with the steak @isappeared half a dozen rolls, two English chops, celery and ice cream, accompanied by coplous draughts of old ale, numerous glasses of cham- pagne punch and coffee. The prize was fa bottle of champagne, which Mrs. Behacfer also disposed of very com- fortably. ‘The dinner lasted from § o'clock Thursday night until 6 o'clock Fri- day interspersed by dancing and a vaudeville entertainment; yet, when a reporter from The Evening rid called upon Mrs, Schaefer yes- y at her home, No. 366 Lenox ave- the dauntless eater of beef was 8 fresh and blooming as though all-night symposiums were things un- dreamed of in her career, She had been making some calls in the neighborhood and was just ready to start out on another expedition. Mrs. Schaefer, it may be stated, ta a] 8° pleasing and youthful-looking mother of five children, ranging trom ten years to eighteen months. She weighs about 150 pounds. “Tired?” she said. “Well, I should say not. I wish it were all to do over Again to-night. We had simply a grand time. No, I didn’t feel any bad effects at all. I danced all night after we fin- ished the dinner. “Yon see, this contest business was an impromptu affair. The dinner was arranged by the men members of the club, to bo given to the ladles so that they could see just what a real beef- steak dinner was like. Then, after we got started, somo one suggested that We #liduld have a race to see who could eat the most in the shortest time. “The men were waiting on us, mow, with butchers’ aprons yround them. The billiard tables were used to set the things on as they were brought tn; but we had no tables—just fat around on old boxes and had no Enives or forks. “Each lady was given a fine linen apron, trimmed with lace and with! $l a bib on which were embroidered the initials of the club, H. 0.
