Central Office detectives, spurred-on by the District-Attorney's Office, are @ally raiding the nests of the loan sharks in the business sections. During the past week arrests have {een made in more than seven of these ' places on evidence secured by Assistant District-Attornay Kresel, who for @ month has been busy in the matter, So hot has been the pursuit, that according to evidence now in the hands of Mr. Kresel they have banded to- gether for mutual protection and em- ployed several lawyers. A large sum of money, it is asserted, was raised at a reoent’ meeting of the most proml- nent of these loan sharks, to buy off a certain official who has been most ac- tive in bringing them to court. Rumors of Bribe Money. A eumor that a large sum of money had been raised has been current in the Criminal Courts Building for several fiays. When Mr, Kresel was asked about tt he sald: “I am not ready as yet to talk about that, I am so busy preparing cases against these fellows that I haven't had UUme to take up that matter. It will receive my attention later.” Nearly all the persons so far arrested have been women. Two were sought last night by Central Office Detectives Mo- Conville, Clarke and Peabody on war rants issued by Justice Wyatt, of Spe~ celal Sessions. One, Mrs. Virginia G. Bell, of No, 257 West One Hundred ana if ‘Twenty-eighth street, tried to escape the detectives by way of the fire-escape from her apartments. Tolman, then of No. 20 Broadway. Two women clerks were arrested, convicted in Special Sessions and fined $200 each. Assistant District-Attorney ‘Kresel asked the Court to impose @ punishment, but this the Court refused, warning the de- fendants, however, that @ second ‘con- ! wiction would mean {mprisonment. Since ‘then one of the women, Miss Von Linda, ‘ass been convicted again, ‘With Miss Von Linda, who 4s a teach- jer in a Brooklyn Sunday-school, was another of Tolman’s olerks, Ella M. Beebe. After a fine of $300 she was \warned to quit the business and sol- emnly promised Justice Olmsted to leave the employ of Tolman, Detectives found her at her old desk again Satur- flay and she-was again arrested. Plans Kept Seoret. Because of Mr. Jerome's ruling that none of his assistants in the office shall talk for. publication while he is out of town Mr. -Kresel would not re- veal any of his plans to-day. One of the Justices of Special Ses- sions, who is especially interested in the bringing of these particular fenders to trial, said to-day: “Hereafter there will be jail sen- tences when these women are convict ' ed. We have found that they go right back to same business, We haven't been able to get evidence against the) ‘real backers, but have got a good many wemen. A few jail sentences will have a good effect.” FIRE FOUND ON STEAMER: APACHE Captain Summoned All Hands . and Soon ‘Put Out the Blaze —No Passengers Were on Board—Loss Small.
