es “WEAR-SIDE” RULE Within Week or Ten Days Public Will Have an Opportunity to Express Opinion of the Foolish Ordinance. ALDERMEN NOW IN FAVOR OF ITS REPEAL. “Little Tim” Reiterates Promise _ that He Will Strive to Abolish Obnoxious Measure if He Finds Sentiment Against It. Those who have suffered from the dperation of the “near-side” ordinance, ¥nd that fs practically every man and woman in Gregter New York who has ecasion to ride in surface cars, will pave an opportunity shortly to tell the Board of Aldermen what they think of the foolish measure. ‘This much was decided upon to-day vy Alderman Timothy P. Sullivan, Vice+ Chairman of the board and the Tam- many director of affairs of that body. The beautiful snowstorm made him think. Chairman Haggerty, of the Railroad Committee, also agreed that a public tearing is a necessity as a preliminary Btep to the abolition of the foolish or- finance. They—"Little Tim,” the Aldermanic @lrector-gencral, and Chairman Hag- gerty—depided that some ddy next week or the week after should be allotted to the hearing, Just which day neither would say. “Chairman Haggerty will decide upon the date,” said Alderman Sullivan. “I quite agree with the idea of “a public hearing, and I would like it to be well attended. I want to hear from both eifes, If the preponderance. of sentl- scent is against the present ordinance we will repeal it at the very next meeting ef the board, Just give the ordinance another week's trial or so, then he will be prepared to take it up for considera- | tion. I can't do any more than that, and will personally urge Chairman Hag- gerty to set a date for ‘the hearing within the next week or ten days.” In the mean time the public is clam- ering for the repeal of the nonsensical regulation, Mayor McClellan continues to be besieged with letters from indig- gant but, public-spirited men and women who demand the repeal of the “near- gide” measure, for the public good. Officers of women’s clubs have been among those. demanding the repeal, for the ordinance works a great hardship en women, The Merchants’ Association, the Board of Trade and Transportation, wocial organizations and kindred bodies have written to thé Mayor and mem- bers of the Board of Aldermen demand- ing the repeal. Mayor McClellan says he is prepared to act immediately following action by the Board of Aldermen. “I could not— now that the subject has been before the board and Is still before that body— consistently give an opinion on ; the proposition to repeal the ‘near-side’ or- dinance,” he said to-day. I have an opinion, however. The whole matter will come before me for approval, and there will be no delay in any action I then may take.” It was learned that Mayor McClellan 4s opposed to the foolish ordinance, and favors an immediate repeal. He will lose no time in approving the repealing measure when the board has done its duty. The majority of the members of the Board of Aldermen continue to favor the repeal of the ordinance, and when the question is allowed by the leaders in the board to come before them the ordinance will be killed. Alderman Reginald S, Doull, who, at the suggestion of ‘The Evening World, introduced the original resolution calling for the repeal of the “near-side" law, sald to-day: that if the board, does not @ct next Tuesday he will reintroduce his resolution at the following meeting. “If I find that course necessary,” sald the Alderman, “I shall open the discus- sion with the promised support of a majority of the members. believe, however, that the Railroads Committee will have hnd a public hearing by that time and be prepared to report favorably for the repeal. oATAROR: s.tearas tas es moet Emus ‘ayor’ “Fry it. An early call avoids the rush, ‘Sixth Avenue & Nineteenth Street: FANT: 7 WOMEN Crowds Deserting Surface for Bridge Cars on the Brooklyn Side Make the Jam the Worst of the Season. So great was the bridge crush on the Brooklyn side early to-day that three women collapsed while trying to get a car to bring them to Manhattan. The stormy weather and the terrible conditions prevailing so far as surface travel was concerned made thousands | who usually travel on the surface lines desert the cars at the bridge and pay an extra fare to reach Manhattan. At 8 o'clock when the crush was its worst, Mrs, Ella Atkinson, of No, 1% Tenth street, Bronoklyn, wedged in the crowd clutched a man in frontgf her and fell in a heap. The crowd ‘surgea forward and’ the couple of policemen on the platform had their hands fult, The sight of Miss Atkinson, who was apparently lifeless, held up by the crowd caused two more to swoon. These were carried into a car, and it Is said were revived before the car reached Manhat- tan. Miss Atkinson, who first fainted, was {taken downstairs to the women’s wait- jing room, where she was revived. She refused to give her name and after a féw minutes was able to proceed on her way. ‘The crush at the bridge was the worst ever seen there, according to the police. ‘The conditions prevailing on the other side are every morning, but to- day the police say the record w: broken for crowds. id MRS.
