(Special to The Evening World.) NEW ORLEANS, La, Dec. %— Charlie Eilison was the most disap- pointed owner at the track over the outcome of the Christmas Ellison thought he to win the stake: with his three-year- old Capt. Arnoid, He “doped” Ex- clamation second best and bought the filly for $9,500 from Capt. 8. 8. Brown, in the morning. Exclamation and Capt. Arnold were coupled as Ellison's en- trles and the, pair finished back in the rut. Jim Arthur won the with Little Elkin and Ww. it did him no good as far as the purses were concerned, both horses being run up far above the value of first money in their respective races, "Texas" Smith raised Little Elkin, while “Kan- gas”, Prics boosted’ W. J. Deboe. Willie Hennessey, who 1s riding tn g00d form down here, will probably Ko Bast with Morris L., Hayman next Spring. Dick Watkins, who js training, Hayman’s horses, developed Hennessey| at Bt. Louis last season. Hennessey is| one of three brothers, Jimmie and) Johnny being the other two boys.| Jimmie weighs only sixty pounds and is} probably the most promising rider of hi Weight in this country. He is here with J. ¥. Daniels, the o' of Helen Print and other useful platers, De Reszke would havo probably cut | | | some figure in the Christmas Handicap if he had gotten off in the first flight. Tie worked a very fast trial and was highly regarded by his trainer until the track’ became heavy, Willie Midgely's ‘Tribes Hill is another horse that had| bad luck in the Christmas Handicap. START OF A TWENTY-MILE RACE FROM THE PARC DES PRINCES, WITH A NUMBER ON IT. N England and on the Continent I footraces over roads are the craze. Every once in a while such a con- test is held, and never yet have there been less than 4,000 entries to any one. Even women take part in the races they having events of their own. ‘The habit has apparently been taker on in New York. Never in the history of athletics has such interest been dis- played in a raco as The Evening World's dawn-of-the-year event, which will be started at midnight of Dec. 31, just as the tooling of whistles, the L owing of horns and+ shooting of pistols mark the birth of 1904. It Just seems that every boy and man in the big metropolis is a runner, for since ‘The Evening World announced the holding of the race, entries have poured into the office in bundles. Americans will not be outdone by foreigners in any line, and the thou sands who will start in the big race are sure to make the numerous contestants in foreign events look like a little mob in_comparison. The fact that The Evening World has offered $260 in prizes to the first forty- three to finish the race has proven a sreat incentive. That gives every one in the race a chance to win one prize or another. To the winner will go $2 garding the dotalls of the great event.
