Mr. Murray will be placed in charge of the machine in the city and if the plans of the Governor are carried out there will be no halting in the campaign for 1904, In adiiitton to Mr, Murray taking the Place of Mr. Bruce, Armitage Mathews will replace George Manchester as Seoretary of the committee. For ten years Mr. Manchester has handled the details of campaign work, been the right hand man of county presidents, including Edward Lauterbach, Lemuel E. Quigg, Gen. Greene, Robert Morris, Mr, Bruce and others. Mr. Mathews is distinctly an anti-Platt man. He was an Assistant District-Attorney un- der (W. M. K. Olcott, now law partner of Abe Gruber. Mr, Gruber made him an Alderman. While an Alderman, Mathews was the object of attack by Mayor Low at the reorganization of ‘the Board. He*was carried in upon @ stretcher to vote for the organiza- tion, After having done this Mathews was considered opposed to anything Mayor: Low favored personally. He incurred the enmity of the Citizens’ Union and was an advocate of Repud- lican rather than Fusion principles. His selection by the County Commit- tee to supplant Manchester is taken as an indication that in the ongantza- tlon Mr. Gruber will have much to say. ‘The Influence of Gruber, Lauterbach and others in the reorganized Commit- tee wil be strong, and their sumges- tions as to the proper methods to be followed for strengthening the party Mnes in, the county will have’ great weight. It Is Now Predicted that There WIH Be a Prolonged Howl In Tammany. When the New State Is Announced. As the time draws near for the ap- pointment of officials to assist George B, McClellan in governing the city it | the Grows more and more apparent that Charles F, Murphy is puzzled and wor- ried. On the one hand he is besleged by old-time Tammany office-holders who resigned under the Van Wyck regime and were up to their necks in the Ram- @po and Ice Trust woandals. On the other hand, he 1s cautioned by men who desire'to see Tammany strike out in a new direction, and between the two cur- rents he is a twisted man, It is evklent that nothing has been decided upon regarding the Police Com- misstonership. Word comes from Lony don that J, Sergeant Cram announces positively that he would not take the ‘Treas-| place if it were offered him. Both Mr. McClellan and Mr. Murphy realize that upon the conduct of the Police Department for the next two years the Tammany administration must Stand or fall. The polic) force is a hard army to handle. ‘To got a man who knows policemen, is a disciplinarian and at the same time Mberal is a task that looked easy before election, but is becoming extremely arduous. ‘The hidebound Tammany men are im- ploring Murphy to disregard public sen- timent and give the jogs to the “boys.” The chronic office-holders who have lived on what they could get from the city for years are howling for places, and in their howls there is @ trace of menace. ‘The leader of Tammany 1s deing told taht no matter who is the head $f the Police Department the organization will get the ill will of the public anyhow and it is better to have a ‘safe man ‘who can be handled than a stranger. ‘Tammany ‘Hall was crowded to-~ddy with the men whose fingers itch for & chance to close on city checks, They stormed Murphy, but he turned a cold and wrinkled ear to most of them.
