[STALWART WITH HER BEST SHAPE BS C. Whitney's Fast Maret By His Victory in Champagne Stakes Whitney Two-Year- Old Shows His True Form and Pleases His Admirers. The victory of Stalwart In the Cham- pagne Stakes was something of a sur- prise. Yet {t was pleasing to those who early in the season picked Stalwart for one of the best youngsters of the sea- son. What could have ailed Stalwart all the season no one knows, bue he was cer- tainly a disappointment, He always had plenty of speed, but usually at the end of five furlongs his ears would pin back and he would evince a disposition to quit, no matter what persuasion his rider used, Yesterday he was an entirely different horse. He not only had all his speed, but at the end of the route was going cOmparitively easily and was apparently willing to go along a good bit further. O'Neill Criticised, There were some who were inclined to criticise O'Neill for going to the front with Pulsus, claiming that if he had been taken back and hia speed reserved fie could have outsprinced Stalwart in the end, O'Neill, however, probably rode ito orders. Mr. Madden ts a close ob- Iserver of racehorses and of races, and he probably tigured, as did nine men out of ten, that Pulsus with his great flight of speed could make Stalwart quit as usual at the end af five furlonas. But Stalwart was o different horse yesterday. Ife was an uncommonly good horse, and the fact that he beat Pulsus reflects no discredit on the Madden youngster, for Puleus was conceding ten pounds. Though Stalwart had some- thing In hand at the end. he was not much the better. At even weights the chances are that Pulsus would trim him. Best Race Ever Run The time for the race—l.26—shows tha from the standpoint of speed it was th fastest race by a full second ever for this stake. Mlitonian ran In 1.2 fall. beating Aceful, and that was t record for the stake. In point of spe it was also the best race ever run over the course. for though Chuctanunda and Mamie Worth both ran in the same Ume, the former was_a three-year-old and carifed only 115 pounds. while Mamie Whrth, also three vears old, car- ried only 107. ‘The performance bf’ both Stalwart mnd Puisus must be set down as one of'the best races of the season. Coburn Getting Heavy. SJockey Coburn fainted in the paddock esterday. The boy was weak from ex- haustion _ produced by reducing _ to weight. Coburn is growing heavy and has to use drastic treatment to get to a weleht at which he can accept mounts, The chances are he will go to England or France next season, where he wweihts would give him a “chance ‘0 ride, t e u t GOLFERS BRAVE ~TRWING RAN STAPLETON, 8.
