THE WORLD TUESDAY SPORTING NEWS SPECIALLY REPOR URNS NO MATCH FOR WILLIE MACK Brookiyn Lad Won His Fight in Schenectady in the Sixth Round. ®OHENECTADY, N. Y., Oct. 6— Tee twenty-round fight between Larry Burns, of Cohces, and Willle Mack, of Brooklyn, a: 130 pounds, would have re- @ulted in a knock-out for Burns had fais seconds not thrown up the sponge Ym tae fast of the sixth. Both men were under weight at 3 P. M, yesterday, but Mack had gained @onziderable by the time he entered the ring. Burns seemingly had not. They shook hands at 1215 A. M. qhen Mack at once started on the ag- (gressive and kept it up all through. Near the end of the first round Mack landed very heavily on Burns's mouth, bringing blood, and followed it up with wallop on the wind, which practically Kea the fignt. for Burns had no heart for strenzth after it. Maek Played Grogsy. Ym the second round Mack piayed grog- @7 to coax Burns close so he could jand @ left swing, which he succeeded in du- {mg. Burns's blows fell short and were} without much strength when they did Jand. In the third round Burns showed up Wetter and both landed some heavy ex- ohanges. Mack got !n a swipe on the oar which nearly took Burns's head off. Whe punch Mack was trying for wou lanve finishod the fight. Burne was ve ‘weak, but he could not land it. He w r down at the end of the round with one hand on the floor, but saved him. Burns's blows were wild and short In the fourth and he was bleeding from the the bel! nose freely, Mack played for his sore nose chiefly. Mack was aeemingly very strong and comparatively fresh at the end of the round, Burns was the aggressor in the ffth round, Mack evidently wating for hi chance. Some heavy exchanges o curred and were about even. Burns was dazed and went to the wrong corner when the bell sounded, Mack started in to finish Burns in the gixth round. Repeated Nard wallops to Burns's wind with the lett, followed hy @ right on the jaw and neck nearly did the trick. Burns tried to escape by clinching. Mack played gtoggy, and when Burns came f:, landed a soaker on the point of the jaw and on the side of the jaw. Mack then landed a stinger on nose and another with the right on the jaw. Burns down and out but for the throwing up of the seonge. Burns was outclassed. Five hundred persons were present. Mercer’s Good Work on the Scrub Eleven Insures Him ; a Strong Showing with the; "Varsity Eleven. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 6—In W. L. ‘Mercer. the big 205 pound candidate for @ullback, who showed up on Soldiers! Wield vesterday afternoon. Harvard has 2 man who promises to Ko far toward Jelleving the cloud of gloom which lately has ensbrouded the crimson football putlook. Short, stocky, yet graceful in every Mne, Mercer has every ¢ualification for a fast, line-bucking fullback. As fullback and halfback on the 1900 and 191, -Holy Croes eleven he earned o ‘Feputation that has made the coaches extremely eager to get him out this year and it has been solely through thelr ef- forts that his name Is now given out as @ candidate for the Crimson team, His parenis, it seems, objected to his play-/ ing football, but arguments were brought to bear upon them wilch have caused | them to change thelr minds, Mercer did brilliant work on the occa- gion of his first appearance in the scrim-! mage yesterday. He bucked the line! Jow and hard, and smashed ahead In the interference like a cannon ball. Through his efforts mainly the scrub earned a touchdown on the ‘varsity, advanc’og the ball fifteen yards on fleroe, driving lunges through the line. H OE Mercer plays full Mills, who has lately been trie’ at that @osition, will undoubtedly go back into the linc, where his weight and*cxperience can be ured to the greatest advantage. ‘There is a still further possibility that Moyne, ithe wonderful freshman atn- te from Stone's School, will also be plased at full, in which case Harvard tends to utllize Mercer's weight 4 tm the line. At all events, Merce: pearance Is a great relief to the Crim- mm coaches, 1 TIGERS TAY A NEW QUARTER-BACK (Bpecia! to The Evening World.) — | PRINCETON, N. J.. TOO MUCH MUNROE FOR M BY KNOCK-OUT, (Special “to The Lvening World.) PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 6 Jack Munroe won another battle last night. But he got it by default. Jack McCormick, burly almost as the Butte miner's rugged opponent, Jeffries, was the day they swapped runches in the faraway Montana town, footed up the box-office re- ceipts, looked the miner over as he sat In his corner waiting the call to battle and then walked out of the Washington Sporting Club's arena. “Not enough money,” sald he as he left the building. Possibly he made a slip of the tongue. ‘CORMICK | “Too much Munroe,” he meant, Crowd Hooted McCormick. Be that as it may, he slipped out of the club-house and went away Into the night with the cat-calls and hootings of his fellow townsmen ringing in hie ears. Munroe, waiting a time in his corner, while the possibilities of a substituce were thrashed out, looked the picture of rugged, pink-skinned health, ‘Then he made a little speech to the effect that he was there ready and will- jug to fight, that any man in the wot from Jeitriés down ‘could be accommy dated, and then jumped out of the ring and pushed through the crowd that wus waking the dead with cheers for the inun Who once downed the glantkiller of the heavies, Jim Jeftries.
