Magistrate Bartow, in the Centre Street Court, was called upon to-day to decide the question whether’a man 1s married or not has any legal bearing on his qualification aa a voter. Valentine Carleton, a relative of the famous tenor, and who for more than ten yeara was clerk to the Grand Jury, was arraigned before the Magistrate on the compla'nt of John D. Maher, Deputy State Superintendent of Elections, who alleced that Mr. Carleton had, in vio- lation of section 676 af the laws of 1898, “refused and neglected to answer ques- tlons placed to him by the Deputy Superintendent of Hlections while the defendant was under oath." Since 189% Mr. Carleton has lived at the Occidental Hotel, Bowery and Broome street, being an intimate and personal friend of the hotel propriem@r, Samuel Kahn. In pursuance to the provisions of the election laws Deputy Supt. Maher went to the Occidental Hotel. last evening to interrogate the guests there who vote from the hotel.
