McAvoy, Tammany leader in the Washington Heights district, Ex-Inspector McAvoy has been leader of the Twenty-third four years, having vonquered William E, Stillings, who had been the Tammany boss on the Heights ever since it was only a series of scattered settlements, and he has had to fight to retain the leadership very year since. Except his fighting for Stillings, four years ago, “Dooley,” the contractor, is tasting the first excitement of volitics, ind he likes {t. He has the nomination sf the United Democratic Club and the support of several other organizations. His headquarters are at the Club, at Righth avenue and One Hundred and ‘Twenty-third street, and he says he was makinr so much nolse there that McAvor got scared and moved his William L. It happened the other night that the rivals had selected opposite corners of the same ayenue and street for cart-tail meetings. The Dooleyites got there after the McAvoy meeting had got well under way. The chairman was tntro- ducing himself as one who had “been a Republican all my life," and Willlam B. Stillings was on the cart in token of his complete surrender to McAvoy and his complete reclamation. But Mr. Dooley had a brass band, which tooted “Mr. Dooley," and ni “boys,"" under the guidance of “Jim Farrelly, burned red fire and filled the air with shooting rockets and Roman candies. Dooley made a speecn in which he pointed to the other corner and de- clared 1t illustrated his charge that his old “boss,” gs, not McAvoy, was the leader of *the opposition. In five minutes pearly the whole McAvoy meeting had deserted the young man who had been a Republican all hig life, and Dooley had them all. Lieutenants of the Leaders, Dooley's lieutenants include William F. Norton, Dr. Emile Brungr, Michuel King, William C. Rodgers, Nathan D. Jacoby, John P. In view of the fact that John C.; patronage had not been distributed. In Sheehan and William Hepburn Russell are the leaders of the revolt against the renomination of Mayor Low, the question has arisen, “What is the voting strength of the Greater New York De- mocracy?” On this point there is e wide diver- gence of opinion. Wiliam Hepburn Ruesell said yesterday that the organi- zation controlled 20.000 votes. It barely managed to squeeze through the 10,000 votes necessary to preserve its life as a party factor. Since that time there have been serious internal dissensions.
