AMERICAN LEAGUE PARK, NEW | YORK, July 6.—“If Hades fe any hottor \than thts ball park," sald “Rowdy Jack’ |O’Cannor this afternoon, “I am going to |Join Parson Davy Fultz's Sunday-schoo} class and reform.” ‘Three thousand coatless and many of them umbrellaed fans would have add- ed their names to the list as wall, for joertain it is there are no hotter spots between the Battery and Yonkers, GriMth had Adkins, the Beloit College pitcher, out at work early in the broil- ing sun, Adkine is about three times the elze of Willle Keeler, measured side- ways, and Grif means to shape him to lay by the ond of this week. Adicins looks like a good pitcher, de- spite his weight, and has speed to burn if nothing else. Gri signed him in Chi- cago last week and {x going to give him @ thorough trying out. Tannehill, however, was selected to do the twirling to-day, as Grif was taking no chances, Bix straight wins—four of them in two days—is a pretty good re~ ord, but then Grif means to make it much better, ten at least, and was anx- fous to make Chicago the contributor to-day. Conroy and Davis were still on the hospital list and GriMth 1s willing that they should stay there until they are well, and especially with Howell and MoFarland doing such good work. Davis will, in all probability, work to-mor- row, certainly in the 6t Louis series. Work on the grounds goes merrily on. ‘The sodded spots are getting larger and clover together and the wire netting is being etretched over the right fleld fence ‘eo shut off the home runs. As things get nearly finished Mr. Gordon's smile grows broader, and this afternoon he dlecovered another lock of hair oa the top of his shiny pate. The gate re- colpts, too, are growing a respectable size and the Gordon family 1s now hav- ing its full quote of three square meals a day. GriMth has been given inatruc- tions to add another catcher to his staf You have heard of Blues of course Not the sort that takes hold of yo. and makes you think the whole world Is in gigantic conspiracy against your welfare, But this Blues often gives you the same feeling. Sometimes he Is race horse, At other times he 1s the meanest of little yellow dogs. When he js in the humor he will run like a streak of animated lightning, But he ts not often in that humor, More money has been lost on Blues than would fill the United States ‘Treasury vaults, Very Uttle has been won on him. His victories always came at a time when the race track looks coldly upon him, He has been cussed more than any horse that wag ever foaled, and the man who named him must have had a premont- ‘ton. Blues 1s the property of Frank Far- rell. He is now five years old. He is well bred, being by Sir Dixon out of Bonnie Blue II. He Hhes run some brili- fant races at times. There is little doubt that if Blues had been Ddiessed with a kind disposition he would have been one of the greatest race horses this country ever saw. e Blues was trained by Tom Welch ist season, This year Frank Farrell took ‘him in hand. It was said that Trainer Weir had cured Blues of his oocentrici- ties, At Westchester Blues started in a seven-furiong dash. It was his first ap- pearanos. He went away with the speed of a whirlwind. He won in wery fast time, His jockey could soarcely pull him down to a walk at the end. Every one said Weir was a miracle worker. Blues started again, His company was moderate. The crowd poured money in on him. ushed away with the same burat of His backers chuckled. But somet happened. Blues curled up when the race was half run and c&me home nodding his head aa if la ing at the Joke he had played on hie backers. “Same old Blues" said the crowd. And that's what Blues 1s to-day. Same old Blues. Nothing more need be said of him, —————___—_ WASHINGTON PARK RESULTS. (Special to The Evening World.) Y., July 6—A fleet of fitty yachts took part to-day (n the opening race of a series of regattas which are to be held under the auspices of the Lachmont Club every day this weok, and there were some exciting contests between the eighty-footers for Supremacy at the etart. There was a southwest breeze blowing at the rate of elght miles an hour when the starting eignal was given, but this intreased to ten miles an hour two hours later and the yachtsmen were pleased. All morning there whe a heavy fall of rain, but in the afternoon the sun came out and @ charming racing day followed. A large flotilia of steam yachts and launches followed the racers over part of the course. On the Regatta Com- mittee’s tug there was a party of prom- fnent yachtsmen, who enjoyed a nail as well as an opportunity ¢o witness the races. In the race for eighty-footers the Neola, owned by C. M. Pynchon, Weet- amoe, Isolde and Elen were entered. Weetamoe crossed the line first about ten feet ahead of the other competitors Then followed the Neola, Isolde and Ellen in close procession, there being only a few seconds between them. Will tt be E. E. Smathers or Harry Payne Whit- ney, The names of both were mentioned yesterday at the Sheepshead Bay track as the probable purohasers of the colt. When John E, Madden bought the half interest in the Great Trial winner from E. R. Thomas on Saturday his action caused no end of comment. Many and varied were the speculations as to the why and wherefore, The price that Madden {s reported to have paid for Pulsus—$15,000-—was considered the prop. er valuation of the youngster, inasmuch 4s his “form,” both In private and pub- Uc, has been distinctly high class. But why did Madden want to buy out the share of the young millionaire? was the query of horse-owners and trainers, It was known that “The Wizard" had voluntarily offered Thomas a half in- terest in Pulsus at the time J, W. May had sold the colt in the spring: so why the purchase of that interest at a big advance? The golution of the sale was cleared Up somewhat by the stories afloat at the track—rumors that connected the names of two wealthy men with the ule timate result of the transaction. It was reported that Harry Payne Whitney and E. E. Smathers were after the colt, and that one or the other would buy him, They Want Alliance. Pulsus {s not the only colt that the two men are after.
