Per- sonally he never cared greatly for such trifles, and as it is getting a trifle small for him and the interest 1s grow- ing, he js fast losing what little fond- ness he had for it. It was Sullivan himself who frst dubbed it the “dog collar.” Officially it 1s known as the championship belt, and firat came into Sullivan's possession after his fight with Kilrain in 1899. After John L. had counted out one hun- dred and fitty one hundred dollar bills as his share of the money profits on that occasion some one pushed the belt across the table and said: “And there's the belt, John; yours, too Called It @ “Dog Collar.” The big fellow glanced at it con- tematuously. “Take that dog collar away,” he “I wouldn't be caught dead that's @ thought better of it.
