£ HANSON WON $3000 ON HERO Plunger Took 4 to 1 for His Money and Didn’t Stop Bet- ting Until the Horses Were at the Post. As a plunger, Whitney Langdon faded into insignificance yesterday. He was in ruth a piker as compared to the dash- ing Davy Johnson, who made one of the ( cqups of the year on Heno in the Standard Stakes, Johnson had a bunch of information that sent him up and down the line on Heno. It was a thousand here, $50 there, and a couple of hundred in odd books where the price sulted. He never stopped playing until the horses were going to the post, when he emerged from the ring, flushed and perspiring, his eyes bright with excitement and his hat tilted back on his head. “What did you take?” asked a friend, ‘Heno. I've bet $8,800 on him. That was all I had in the world.” ‘Won at Least $30,000, Heno came home on the bit, and John- gon did not clean up a cent less than $20,000, for he got 4 to 1 for the bulk of his wager. Johnson said he bet all he had, but that was probably a figure of @peech. He could have bet $20,000 if he Mked, for his credit is unlimied, and he layers know that no matter how \dbgp the plunger may go he will always ersep out. Langdon's greatest winning, so far as known, was $22,000 on Eugenia Burch at ‘Westchester last fall, but several times he cleaned up $10,000 and $15,000 to a single race. But yesterday the brilliant young plunger was eclipsed. Heno's victory was not anticipated by the public. They looked gor Africander to wip and win easily. But Michaels, on | Heno, avidently had instructions to [stick to Africander every foot of the way. Billy Lakeland probably knew the peculiarities of Africander and thought that Heno by hanging to the three- }year-old would maké him sulk or run ut, and that was precisely what hap- ened. Africander did <urn sour and tried to run out on the far turn a Quarter of a mile from home, and then eno came home as he pleased. The pace was a corker from the etart, and it would have taken a three- year-old of great courage to hang on ‘and outgame the older horse at the pace that was being set. Major Daingerfleld ran a good race. He hung on good and game and did as well as he could be expected under the ciecumstances. He was asked to run a @alle and a half with 126 pounds up first @rack out of the box, and it was a severe question to ask of any horse. He was beaten less than four lengths, go that he must have run In 2.34, which was a cracking good performance. Major Daingerfield will improve wonderfully under this performance and should taky @ lot of beating in the Suburban Handi- cap. Wenth Consecutive Favorite Beaten Africander was the tenth favorite in @uccession to be beaten. The talent played The Carmelite in the first race on the strength of a mile in 140 at Bheepshead. The Carmelite did not run any mile in 1.40 in hig race, dying under the end of six ‘furlon Si2ieconayeses they sade, Rekanoe ce Meddler two-year-old from the Whitney @table, the choice, but he was never prominent. Then came Agnes D., who ded the (talent’s misery very quickly oy Delng tect at the post ‘Then Afri Cinder followed, By this time the talent was dazed and all but out. It couldn't understand the remarkable hoodoo that attended the favorites, Ten horses in succession was remarkable record {or Gravesend. The les xrew bold and laid Mberal odds against Operator, who was the eleventh favorite, Operator won, and yocund won, and King Pepper won, all three ot them favorites, the ‘talent be- and mp to breathe a bit easier, clean million dollars would not ten favorites that were returned losers.
