@ | CANFIELD CIES BAL $1 Whe Gambler Appears Voluntar- , lly Before Judge Newburger | and Asks that His Bond Be | Fixed at Once. ANDREW J. DAM SIGNS IT. “Bays He Does Not Expect Club- , House at Saratoga to Be Opened, [| but If Patrons Wish He May Con- tinue Restaurant. Richa Canfield learned definitely in {. of General Sessions to-day that re is an indictment against him ing him with being the owner and eesee of the house and gambling ap- paratus at No. 5 East Forty-fourth Wtreet. At the request of his counsel ago Newburger fixed ball, making it ,600, which was furnished by Andrew . Dam, proprietor of the Union Square ‘otel. Judge Newburger had not been on the bench half an hour before Canfleld ap- peared. The gambler was accompanied by his lawyers, John Delahunty and Worbes Hennessy. Assistant District-At- torneys Townsend and Miner represented Mr. Jerome. Asked that Dail Be Fixed. Mr. Delahunty began the proceedings. He told Judge Newburger that his clien! had reason to belleve he was under in- @ictment, and that, if such was the ease, he desired that bail be fixed. “Let me see that indictment,” Whe Court to Clerk Cowing. After a cursory examination of the in- @ictment Judge Newburger asked if $1,500 ball would be satisfactory. Mr. PDeahunty said it would, and that losed the proceeding for the present Whe assistant district-attorneys had not @ word to say throughout. ‘The indictment is similar to that Bound against Canfield's manager, David (Bucklin, differing only in charging him with ownership, whereas Bucklin is wharged with management of a gambling Bouse. ' ‘The Canfield indictment has four wounts. It was handed down on Jan. 83, 1903, the date of the Bucklin indict- ‘ment. In effect Canfield is charged fwith being a ‘common gambler” in the @eaning of the statute. ‘ Sent for His Wife. Canfield, while waiting for the bond ‘to be fixed, sald that he remained in New York over Sunday because it was too late to allow him to get a Provi- Wence train when he finished with the ‘courts on Gaturday, unless he rode most ‘of the night. He has sent for his wife to come to New York, and after a few days will go with her to Providence for ® rest with his family, He refused to ‘discuss his plans concerning bis busi- ‘@ess at Saratoga this summer. ‘The evidence upon which the indict- wment was found was furnished by H. Archibald Pell, Clarence Luce and sald Henry K. Vingut, all well known club- the ‘men. Their Indorsements ghere will be aay play there. 1 ma here and open the restaurant. It all depends entirely on my patrons. If the; desire'me to do so I will. From what hear I don't belioye there will be any ity at Saratoga this summer, however. t Is doubtful if I go there myself.” LAWYERS AT WAR OVER “AL” ADAMS. Free Alcohol in Liquid _Kidney Remedies, No Chance of Alcohol in Kid- | ney-Wort Tablets. The purest alcohol is a wicked thing *!to give to children, It stunts their growth. Cheap alcohol, such as fs used In liquid kidney remedies to make them keep,” is worse, and alcohol of any >|sort when there is kidney weakness Is a terrible blunder, whether for a child or for a grown-up person. Mothers who give their children liquid kidney remedies for bed-wetting and kidney disease, or who take such remedies themselves, cannot know that free crude alcohol is a large ingredient of these remedies, and that alcohol causes more Bright's disease than all natural causes put together. By taking a yvemedy in tablet form you avoid any chance of inflaming your kidneys with alcohol. Dr. Pettin- gill's Kidnéy-Wort Tablets are used in children’s hospitals and in the best equipped als peneerits because they con- tain no alcohol—a serious objection in the mind of every physician to the use of liquid kidney remedies. Kidney trouble irritates the nerves, makes one dizzy, restless, sleepless and irritable. It makes one lie water often during the day, and obliges one to get up many times during the night. Pains in the small of the back keep one con- tinually aware that his kidneys demand help. There is often Pan passing of urine, inflammation of the bladder, tor- id liver, cloudy urine, pains in the ack of the head, rheumatic pains, swellings of hands and ankles, and jaun- dice, These sympion and many more warn one to stop the disease. The following letter is picked at ran- dom from a mass of testimonials: Boston, Mass., Feb. 16, 1903. Wells & Richardson Co., Burlington, Vt. Dear Sirs—I have found Dr. Pettin- gill’s Kidney-Wort Tablets a marvellous remedy. The very first bottle of the Tablets helped me wonderfully and my condition has taken a remarka! le change for the better. I am more than pleased with the result. Yours respectfully, John E. Webster.
