a | pl 8 SON Seren ee ee RECOVERS FROM FALL OFF COACH Mrs. Wood, Who Was Thrown from Tally-Ho in Smash, Will Get Well Soon, but Footman ts Seriously Hurt. RUNAWAY CAR HIT BRAKE. At the home of Mrs. T. R. Hostetter, No, 5 Hast Seventy-first etreet, it was aid to-day that Mrs. Helen Wood, of Pitteburg, who was hurled to the street from the top of a tally-ho coach, is re- covering. She has récovered trom the hysteria whioh followed the accident, and her physicians believe she will be well from her injuries in a week. The escape of Mrs. Wood from death im considered remarkable. John Wither- ton, one of the grooms on the rear of the coach, is in J. Hood Wright Hos- pital, suffering from concussion of the brain and internal injuries, and it js said he will be confined there several weeks, James G. Marshall, of the stock brok- erage firm of McIntyre & Marshall, tooled the coach out to Ardsley and was returning to the city when the ac- cident happened. On the coach were Mrs, Marshall, Mr. R. Lawrence Smith, @ rea] estate broker; Mrs. Hostetter and her guest, Mrs. Wood. At One Hundred and Elghty-first @treet Mr. Marshall was turning the four horees across the Amsterdam ave- nue car tracks to cross the Washington Bridge to enter the Bronx, when an @ectric car appeared a block away to the north. Motorman Louls Rooney, of the car, yelled to Mr. Marshall that he oould not control the car and to hurry thls four horses and coach over the tracks. Mr. Marstall understood the message and lashed the animals. They sprang ahead, but not in time to avert the crash. ‘The front of the car struck the rear wheels of the couch and turned {t vio- dently about. Witherton and the other groom were knocked from thelr back geat. One of them fell to the pav ment and was not seriously injured, though knocked unconscious by the fall. Witherton fell into the car fender and \ was carried to One Hundred and Sev- enty-eighth street before Rooney ob- tained control of his car and stopped tt. Mrs, Wood was the only passenger knocked from the coach. In falling she caught the side of the vehicle and that caused her to turn so that instead of Gtriking on her head she fell on her side. While she lay unconscious the four horses plunged ahead, but through fine work with the lines Mr, Marshall Drought them under control a block away. ‘Mes. Wood was sent to the J. Hood Wright Hospital, where she was re- vived, after which she was driven to Mrs, Hostetter’s home In a cab. With- orton was taken to tie hospital in an- other ambulance, and he was 0 Be- rlously injured tliat he was detained by the doctors. MADE THE RAILROAD PAY.
