~ PREWAS The E IEE FE OF “MOONSHINE” When the er th Came for a Blaze in the Bronx a Full- Fledged Illicit Still and Its Ac- cessories Were Found, LESSEE OF THE PLACE FLED. Piremen responding to an alarm in the Borough of the Bronx to-day un- earthed the plant of a inetropolita. moonshiner. It was the fourth filicit still unearthed in that borough in a week. The fire ocourred in ‘an aid two-story frame house at No, 957 Exist One Hun- dred and Sixty-first stree'. This house ‘was unoccupied up to a week ago. It stands in a big tot and has a ram- shackle stable behind tt. A man giving the name of Joseph Roseff rented the place. He said he was a tin peddler and Nfred the stable. The next day he appeared with a big wagon loaded down wiih a varied hs- sortment of junk. Mot of this was unlosded after dark. Every morning Rosef] rode away, his wagon piled high with tinware, and every night he came bick, similarly en- cumbered. The neighbors paid little attention. A ‘Women said to be Ofrs, Roseff was geen to run from the house to-day in the direstion of Forest avenue. A few minutes later it was discovered that the second Moor of the house was on fire. The fremen had little diMculty in extinguishing the flames. They ‘found in the house a complete still for the manufacture of whiskey, ten barrels of mesh and a emaller still, evidently used for the making of a fine grede of alcohol. It is supposed that the woman started the fire, was unable to put it out and, after the manner of city moonshiners, deserted the entire still. Capt, Deevy, of the Morrisania sta- | tion, ‘put policemen on guard to inter- cept Roseff.should he come home. The ‘woman was out of sight before the fire wes discovered. “Tt looks as though a gang of Illicit stil] workers had settled up here,” said Capt. Deevy. “The Secret Service men don't seem to be able to keep up with them." FIRE WAS HER ) — ALARN-CLOCK, ; == i Mrs. Anna Greefer Persuaded Her Reluctant Husband to Get !
