Mayor’s Secretary Describes the Things He Used to See on the East Side—Case Ad- journed Until To-morrow. - When the trial of Inspector Adam Cross on the charge of neglect of duty was resumed to-day it was announced that the Assistant District-Attorney Would complete the taking of testimony for the prosecution, but the case was adjourned until to-morrow, with several ‘of the prosecution's witnesses still to be examined. J. B. Reynolds, secretary “to the Mayor, was the first witness to-day. He described what he had seen on the East Side while he was connected with the University Settlement on Rivington street. Often he had been solicited by women standing in front of No. 49 Delancey street and No. 2 Rivington street, but Mr. Reynolds was nevor in- side either of the places. On the cross-examination Mr, El- kus quizzed the witness exhaustively. It was evident that he hoped to show how the Republican party is interest- ed tm Croas's conviction, It was said @t headquarters by a prominent Demo- eratic official that the Inspector's dis- missal would mean 20,000 votes for the administration. A sult brought against J. Sergeant Cram, concerning which ¢the principals ‘will say nothing, ds agitating the gossips who have watched the four and a half years of married life of the lawyer, prominent Tammany counsellor and ex- president of the Board of Dock Commis- stoners. The sult was brought for the firm of Oppenheimer @ Colling, to whom Miss Sadie Jacobs, a dressmaker, assigned on her fatlure all her uncollected debts, The pleintiffs demand that Mr, Cram pay $708 for dresses furnished to his wife. In answer to theese demands Mr, Cram asserts that prior to January, 1902, be- fore the debt was contracted, he had notified Miss Jacobs not to extend any credit to his wife, warning her that if sho did it would be at her own risk. He asserts that the dresses for which the $78 is demanded were furnished after he had sent his notice, and that he is therefore not Mable. Mrs. Beatrice Cram is the youngest of three daughters of Samuel Budd and was known before her marriage as one of the “Three Beautiful Budds.' While Mr, Cram was President of the Board of Dock Commissioners {n 1898 his friends were greatly surprised to hear of his secret marriage to Miss Beatrice Budd, For a month Mr. and Mrs. Cram had succeeded in keeping the fact of their marriage a seoret.
