WELL-BORN BO TURNS BURGLAR Sidney Foster Breaks Into the -Houses of Friends of His Mother in Richmond Hill and Spends Proceeds. ROBBED PASTOR’S HOUSE. Had Been Wild from Boyhood, and Was for a Yime Placed on School- ship St. Mary's in Effort to Re claim Him. Sidney Foster, a nineteen-year-old boy, Who was brought up in luxury in his mother's handsome home in Richmond Hill, 1. 1., and who for several years Was a member of the Rev. George A. Leggitt’s Union Congregational Church fn that place, was held in the Far Rockaway Police Court to-day, charged with a series of startling robberies in the homes of his mather's ‘intimate friends, and also that of his pastor, The Fosters live in a fine big brick house, built in the Queen Anne style, in Richmond Hill, and have always moved in the best social circles in the town. Mrs, Fostt: has two sons, one of whom, Mortimer Foster, is a well-known archi- tect, with an office in this city. When Sidney was a boy he developed a tend- ency to be wild, and a few years ago his niother had him placed on the school- ship St. Mary's and sent off ona foreign etuise, When the ship returned to this country, however, the boy begged to be te’ en off, and went home. Last Thanksgiving Day Mrs. Foster went to Ohio to visit friends and left her sons alone in the big house, For a time Sidney remained about home. About a month ago, however, he and his brother had a quarrel and after that ‘he Was only seen in Richmond Hill at rare intervals. It is known now that he came to this city and fell in with bad company and in that way met a number of notorious criminals. He kept writing to his brother for money and when he did not get enough to keep the pace with his new-found companions he started a series of robberies in Rich- mond Hill that for several weeks baffled the police and aroused the residents so that they appealed to Commissioner Greene, ‘The first house he entered was that of George Weston on Curtis avenue. Mrs. Weston had been a schoolmate of Mrs. Foster and the two Weston boys and Sidney Foster had been boon compan- fons In the days they wore knickerbock- ers, He was thoroughly familiar with the interlor plan of the house, and se- lecting a time when all the family were put, he broke In and stole all the avail- able jewelry he could find. Then the hose of the Rev, Dr. Leggitt was robbed and the citizens became thor- oughly aroused. FIRST GAGS IT WITH FOOD. King Cobra, the most deadly of snakes in the reptile-house In the New York Zoological Gardens at Bronx Park, the most important patient in Curator Ditmar's infirmary. A short time ago tho broke his jaw Ina ft of violent rage, and sinco then he thas had tto be tended every day, as his injury requires fre- quent dressing, Now, one of King Cobra’s fangs con- tain enough venom to kill four grown men, so that one pinch of the sharp teeth would mean instant death. There- fore, the operation of bandaging this serpent has to be gone about with rare delicacy. For the past few days his nurses have been pintoning his head un- der a forked etick, and while he was held in this way Mr. Ditmars hag re- moved the dressing on the fractured jaw, cleaned it with a spray and then bound it up again, All the time the bis cobra would lash about furiously and ‘hiss like an open steam valve, and on one occasion he got loose and just missed Keeper Snyder'svyhand by a frac- tion of an inch, Though Knig Cobra is:the most valu- able snake in captivity, the curator of the reptile house does not value him above a human life, and to-day he hit upon a scheme for rebandaging him which practically obviates any danger of death, This great jungle worm Is a cannibal. He refuses all food except his own kind, and as he has a voracious appetite, he soon became a very ex- pensive boarder. Plump rats, fat rab- bits and broad-backed frogs he turned away from with a viclous swish of his tail. At last the idea occurred to one of the keepers to take a small snake and stuf it with rats and frogs, and in this way reduce the expense of feeding him, When the enake starts in on a meat of this kind he goes about it slowly and deliberately. First he gathers in the head of the snake and then slowly and Moncure Robinson entertained a party of guests at the formal opening of his new home at No. 16 East Seventy-sixth street last night, and although no an- nouncement was made it was generally accepted that it was a practical an- nouncement of his engagement to Mrs, Moses Taylor Campbell, who was the guest of honor, It is said that the wedding may occur ‘before March 10 and that the bride and| bridegroom will 1 Lehr, Florenza Fabbricot Drexel, Mr. Stevens, Mrs, MONCURE ROBINSON GIVES RA \ p \ . 4A DINNER TO MRS, CAM Mrs. Orme Wilson, tlmore; Sidney Dillon Ripley, Contessa rad, of Baltimore; Mr. and Mrs. i Norrie, Mr. Rauborg, Mra, Livingstone, Mr. Gillesple. jenve for Europe with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lehr and Mrs. Stuy- vesant Fish on that date. at the dinner were: Mr. and Mrs. Harty Mrs, Stuyvesant Among those Fish, Mr. and Mr, Perrin, of Bal- tt, Mr. and Mrs. John 1, | Hooley, (Mr. almost imperceptibly sucks it In.
