' HOW WOULD MECOY LIKE THIS ONE, WHAT WOULD CORBETT SAY TOTHIS at In Selecting Clever Brooklynite, Butte Miner Probably Made the Wisest Move of | His Fighting Career. i WILL HAE TO REMODEL TRAC , Crescent City Jockey Club Will : Be Obliged to Spend Much Money to Make Its Course Safe. Judging by the number of clever boxers willing to take Jack Munroe, the big miner, In hand and teach him the trick# of the prise-ring it looks aa though everybody had one purpose—to get Tom Sharkey beaten, The Jatest pugilist to offer Munroe his services as trainer and teacher in the art of swinging, jabbing, uppercutting and cross countering is Tommy West, the clever midMe-welght boxer, of Brooklyn. When Munroe reached town the ret ( man he donned the gloves with was West. Then the pair boxed four rounds. J Munroe was willing to learn, and West liked the miners style in not trying to make him think he knew {t all. They became friends. West offered his services, | Munroe took time to consider the offer, and a day or so ago when he was in | Cleveland he accepted West's offer, but It wil! not be until Munroe beging training for the Sharkey fight that West will be with the miner. In selecting West os his sparring parther Munroe made one of the wisest moves possible. West without a doubt Is one of the oleverest boxers in the | business, To this wonderful cleverness can be attributed bis success in the numerous Gghte he has fought. Beslies being clevor he fs a great ring general He is shifty on his feet and at all times during a battle as coo) as a cucumber. As Munroe Is a fighter who (# willing to learn it woutd not be a surprise if under West's. teaching he developed into one of the best heavy-weight fighters. The frst thing West will teach Munroe will be footwork. The blow he will have Munroe practise until he has it down to perfection will be a straight left Jab to the face. It was that eort of a blow with which Gus Rubin beat Bharkey in the two fights he had with him, It 1s only natural to suppose that West wit! make an effort to teach Munroe to win with the same punch, As Munroe will have fully three months to prepare for the Aght the Indications are that by the time he enters the ring Weet will have him a 100 per cent. im- proved Nghter, Munroe has told the writer that he has every ounfidence in West, and that in itself is a good thing. (Special to The Evening World.) NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 16.The racing here this winter ‘has demon- strated clearly that the Crescent City Jockey Club will have to build a new grand stand and club-house and spend more money for remodelling the track. Last fall a top dressing of sand was put on the course. This hag been of little or no benefit, as the going in bad weather is as treacherous and uncer- tain as :t ever was, The accident to Redfern has brought thig matter home forcibly to the oM- cials, So dangerous is the track in its present condition that it is doubtful if olther good horses or good jockeys could be Induced to take part in the meeting next winter. The club could do various other things in improving the track. The drainage cannot pe improved. The only certain way to make a good track in the water- soaked and porous soll here is to exca- vate the ground ten inches or a foot, put down a solid foundation of asphalt and then fill in with a properly pro- portioned mixture of sand and loam. This will cost money,’ The Crescent City Club will have to make up its mind to do that if it can hope to have good racing. WHAT EFFECT WOULD THIS ONE HAVE, ON THE SALLOR BOWLING IN THE EVENING WORLD TOURNEY WILL BE BRISK THIS WEEK HIGH TEAM SCORES. INDIVIDUAL SCORES. He signed articles of agreement cali- ing for \aiifi&vern to meet Billy May- ‘d, of this city, for six rounda before the Penn Art A. C., of Philadelphia, on Wednesday, Feb. %, and to face Tim Callahen. of Philadelphia, for six rounds before the Industrial A, €., of Pihila- delphia, on Tuesday, March 3, Both battles will be at catchwelghts. Harris also received the articles of agreement to-day for MoGovern’s fight with Ben Jordan in England ‘the first week In May, but he did not sign them, because the articles call for the boys to box with six-ounce gloves instead of five ounces, Harris cabled to Matchmaker Beftison, of the Natlonal Sporting Club of Lon- don, telling him the boys must fight Hb five-ounce «loves before he will sign for the ficht (McGovern left Philadelphia on the 4 P.M. train for this city.
