RRO ae SURGERY FORA PISONOUSSHAKE Dangerous Operation Performed on a Deadly Cobra di Capello at the New York Zoological Gardens. HAD BEEN HURT IN A FIGHT. Keeper atjalciomuiniea with Bam: boo Rod and Lancet and Now the Serpent's Jaw Is Swathed in Ban- dages. One of tho big-headed cobras in the reptile-house at the New York Zoologi- cal Park {s crawling wbout to-day with his jaw muffled up I!ke a boy with the toothache, The bandages were made necessary by a delicate operation which was performed on Mr, Cobra, Shakes fight at times, but little at- tention is pald to wounds they inflict on each other, for the reason that they are supposed to be the effects of a poisonous bite inilicted by one of their own breed, Thrée of the cobras fought several weeks ago, One day last week a swell- ing appeared on the lower jaw of the largest cobra, An examination was necessary, and Keeper Snyder essayed the delicate task. Taking a slender bamboo rod, he lifted the snake from the cage to the floor of the house. The cobra struck viciously in the direction of the keeper, but Sny- der dodged out of the way and soon had | the snake pinned to the floor with his bamboo stick. The cobra was then grasped by the neck and his mouth forced open, An abscess was found on the lower jaw. It was opened and cleaned and an antiseptic dressing ap- ‘On Saturday the swelling had returned and the same operation had to be re-! peated. This time a moist dressing was applied and the bandages are wetted to avold the necessity for taking the rep- tile out of his cage. This is belleved to be the first instance of an operation on a snake, ee Declines Call to the Epiphany. FITCHBURG, Mass., Feb, 16,—Rev. FOR METEOR’S CHRISTENING. Facts Disclosed In Agent Kessler’s Sult, by Which He Gets $2,000 Damages for Alleged False State- ments. By the decision of a Milwaukee (Wis. disease. jury awarding $2.00 damages to George’ A. Kessler, a New York wine agent, for having sheen. libelled by Jacob Best, of Milwaukee, the real reason for the re- call of Dr. von Holleben as the Kalser's Ambassador to the United States has Just come to Hght. The whole trouble arose over the champagne used at the launching of Emperor William's royal yacht, the Meteor, at Townsend & Downey's ship: yard on Shooter Island, opposite Elia- abethport, N. J. Edward Lauterbach, as counsel for Kessler, was responsible for Dr. von Holleben's recall py the Emperor, According to testimony brought out in the sult, Dr. von Holleben had promised Mr, Best that nis brand of German champagne would be used at the launch- ing of the Meteor. He received from the Milwaukee concern fourteen bottles of the wine. Count Quadt, of the German Embassy, then advised Mr. Downey to use the German wine, but Mr. Downey had already made a contract with Kess- ler and so informed him that French wine would be used. Afterward Dr. von Holleben tele- graphed Best and also wrote him that German wine had been used at the christening. Mr. Best thought that the German Ambassador had been the victim of a Yenkee trick and advertised the fact, accusing Kessler of substituting French wine for the German brand. Hence the suit and Dr. von Holleben’s recall. STORES EVERYWHERE 10 RETAIL - BRANCHES Peck, 2lc.; Crackers. Zu Zu Gingers, Kennedy's Oysterettes, Uneeda Milk Biscuit.
