CORONER DOUBTS RETURN. ‘The inquest into the death of Detec- tive Welsh, of the District-Attorney's office, having been adjourned yesterday afternoon, owing to the non-appearance of John Hutchinson, the principal wit- mens in the case, the rumor was per- jetently circulated about the Criminal urts Butlding to-day that Hutchinson had disappeared. Hutchingon is the man who swore to ‘the affidavit on which Mrs, Cherrlere, ‘wife of the proprietor of the “Black Cat” restaurant, where the shooting of Welsh took place, was held. He al- that in the row following the le over the payment of the bill he .@aw Mrs. Cherriere fire the revolver which gave Welsh his death wound. one of the others in the party saw the shot fired. Efforts were made to got Hutchinson to make a public statement of the fects other than was contained the ‘short affidavit? used in the ice court. He would not talk to re- , on the advice of Assistant Dis- lct-Attorney Johnstone, who was also present. Belated Mention of Witness, Johnstone did all the talking, put he admitted that he saw no one fire the shot. Now that Hutchinson's ab- ce is causing comment, it is also Zemembered that there was no men- fion on the evening the tragedy oc- gurred of any one seeing the shot fired. In all the statements given ut that night, ignorance on this point was expressed, It was not until the next morning that the public was permitted to know that there was an @ye witness to this most important tact. : Hutchinson is eald to be a traveling Balesman.
