“HEIDELBERG” A LOVABLE PLAY. New Offering by Aubrey Bouci- . eauit at the Princess Tells a} ~ Pretty Story, but Turns on One at the End. _ COMEDY BECOMES TRAGEDY. Princeling, Who Is a Good Fellow at i “Univ sity and Lover, Too, Comes Back as a King to Find All Is Changed When One is a Highness. A lovable little play ts “Heldelberg,” an English version of which was pre- fented by Aubrey Boucicault last night at the Princess Theatre. Lovable, but thin—as thin as the dry toast that the London landlady serves with your breakfast bacon and marmalade. A deceitful little play, Of ite lovableness, too, in spite ‘ It pretends to be a @omedy. It fools you up to the last moment. You feel sure it 1s going to fd lovey-dovey, with a kingdom toased ride for the humble gell of the inn. But no! At 10.85 that ungrateful little Play turns and rends you. It throws off Its mask and reveals Itself a tragedy, and you come to y ‘eflp in your throat. ‘our senses with a Becomes a ‘“Kink.’’ Mr. Bouctcault playe a melancholy young prince in agilded cage, , after being couped up all his life in his uncle's court, training hard for the throne, is sent to Heidelberg and has fis fling. The death of his uncle sum- mons him back to Sachsen Karleburg to be’ what Mr. Sam Bernani calls a “kink.” Kinking proves to be even more of a re than princing, and in a it o€ peration he flies back to Heidelberg. It 1s here that the play fools you, here that tt shows Its teeth, and here that {tx real depth and hopeless truth: fulness lie. His Highness comes bouncing joyously Anto the fnn garden, where the students Rls old comra are waiting for him. He expects welcoming embraces and shouts; but lo! ectful silence, bows, -Ing, stilted speeches who, \2-He ls no longer a student—he Is @ kink! He awakes with a start. Setéin party, and the students respect- fally depart. A heart-breaking em- brace with Kate, and his poor little kinkship goes meekly back to his throne , and a loveless marriage. A vA-gtinning tragedy, you see, after ail. (Very human was Mr. Boucicault as j-this hapless Mttle Karl Helnrich—very human, and young, and pitiful, with a touch of Hamlet's me and his} Joneiiness, and his selt-repression, and his seuse of helplessness under ev stronger than his own will. Still, you felt like boxing his ears for not fagging the throne tn favor of Katie But the real tenderloin falls to the share of part of a dear o} r, who has edu- eated the Prince, and who takes him to Heldelberg and teaches him how to Wield the red paintbrush to the best advantage. As an exhibitor of warm- hearied old age in a state of hilarious intoxication, Mr. Freeman easily car- led off the ribbon Minnie Dupree hadn't much to do be- yond being heartbroken and ejaculating “Karl Henrich! Oh, Karl Heinrich!" and she did it qu leely.
