ALL THE LATEST NEWS OF THE BUSINESS WORLD. STOCK MARKET GEST IN MONTHS. } Heavy Buying, Higher Prices and Wider Trading Range Keep the Brokers on Change Going and the Street Astir. NO DISTURBING FACTORS. Reduction of Grain Rates, Dissipation of War Talk and Inflow of Money Tended to Encourage Dealingo— Washington Profits on Sugar. To-day’s market was the widest and most buo;ant that Wall street has seen for nearly three months, and in the active operatons of the day nearly the entire list enjoyed Substantial advances. The dissipation of the storm centre around Venezuela removed the most threatening cloud from the market. Its response was quick, sharp and favorable. To the great discomfiture of the bears, the better conditions in Ven- ezuela were followed by good news from every quarter, and their rout- ing was attended with heavy losses in some quarters. The most !mportant news, apart from Venezuela, was the reduction in the prices of corn and wheat. In well-informed quarters it was re- garded as indicative of largely in- creased exports of grain, the conse- quent reduction of our foreign in- debtedness and a lowering of ex- change. Leading the railway list in buoy- ancy were the Rock Island shares, St. Paul, Missouri Pacific, Reading and Atchison, with the former heading all in the activity shown. The best advances in the active Mst were 3 1-2 for St. Paul, Rock Island 2, Baltimore & Ohio 1 1-2, Union Pacific 2, Manhattan 2 3-4, Atchison 21-2, Southern Pacific 8 1-8, Missouri Pacific 2 1-2, U. 8. Steel , and Steel common Continued efforts by traders to as- ‘certain who is to be the final owner of the Hocking Valley Railroad have been mot by persistent silence on the part of J. P. Morgan & Co. It is conceded that the Vanderbilts and A. J. Cassatt, of the Pennsyl- }vania Railroad, are to divide it, but ;When and how worrles the specula- ‘tors. i St. Paul's recent course in the mar- [Ket has been a puzzle, but when it ‘was announced to-day that a group lof Western operators was obliged to ppart with their St. Paul holdings in porcenee Protect other issues, this was partly explained. A prominent St. Paul official an- mounced to-day that St. Paul stock- ‘holders would be given substantial itd in the proposed new stock is- !sue, probably at the meeting next Washington lawmakers and other mational capital speculators who bought sugar when it was 118 reaped their reward to-day. Under the en- couraging av slsp ents showing the highly za:ls »¥ OnUOOK for loeis- lation the stock advanced beyond 126, making a clear profit of 8 points for the lawmakers, The heavy realizing sales in the afterncon, mostly made on telegraph- ie orders from Washington, showed that they were out hiving their Profits while the dew was on. Arbitrage houses suffered losses to- day because of the great activity here at advancing prices and the unex- pected hcom In London. They early sot whipsawed because of the fact that when they sold stocks on receipt of the first London quo- tations, which were lower than here, they couldn't buy here except at a loss, and when they attempted to cover In London they were unable to do Bo. In al! they bought 25,000 shares and lost on the deal. : Confident expectation of a favor- able bank statement helped material- ly to boom prices. For the firet time in weeks the Sub-Treasury has filed to make material gains from the banks. Money from the interfor is coming in freely, and all the indications point to the turning of the tide in this direction. Anticipating January disbursements for interest and divi- ends investors are already entering the market. Call money ruled at 5 per cent, moa} of the day, while time money ‘was oaning at 6 per cent. for sixty- day pp ls. Money conditions were distinct:y more favorable. The loss of $638,000 of the banks to the Sub-Treasury compares with Joss of $4,456,000 in the same period Tast week. Of ‘the $6,000,000 due Jan. 1 for intordst on the public debt, it és eati- mated’ $2,000,000 will be paid out by thé Sub-Treasury in Wall street, —_ Pays Extra Di Decaspiue ‘Trust cokivicy ha THE WORLD: THURSDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 18, 1902, BOLD BEARS WHO BAITED MORGAN GET A HURRY CALL AND GO DOWN.
