STOCK TRADERS STILL HOLD OFF, = Market Dealings Listless, and Efforts of Pools to Work Up Interest Fail Because of the Monetary Outlook. ROCK ISLAND BOOM TRIED. ———<—<— Some Little Encouragement In that Quarter, But Other Issues Do Not Respond—Even the Rockefeller Brokers Apathetic. —<_— Consideration of to-morrow’s prob- able bank statement caused stock market transactions to shrink to an inconsiderable volume to-day. The known losses of the banks to the Sub- Treasury and the general conditions influencing the money situation were sufficient to induce the bullish element to temporarily abandon the field. In a narrow market, where losses of from 1 to 3 points were sustained in nearly the entire list, the bears were noticeable by the mildness of their demeanor. Absence of liquidation in all but a few instances and the strength shown notably by dividend paying stocks when attempts were made to sell them short were the factors which, combined, caused the bcar party to adopt waiting tactics. The most pronounced Meature of a remarkably dull session was the ap- parent lack of support given their specialties by the Rockefeller-Stand- # rd Oll-Amalgamated Copper specu- Jators. Ordinarily either pronounced bulls or bears, the representatives of the Rockefeller-Rogers combination were to-day apthetic. When their stocks were attacked they let them sag. ‘When a buying spurt was shown in Amalgamated Copper or St. Paul they furnished the buyérs with all the stock they wanted and let the boom end there. Commission houses with out of town ‘Connections reported practically no business at all. The public could not be stimulated to enter the field, and to-day’s operations were chiefly conducted by the room traders and the operators who were willing to take profits on a quarter decline or a fractional advance. London's trading on the arbitrage plan was as featureless as the rest of the market. There was a difference yi of parity between New York and London all day, but the extent of the trading was 10,000 shares. Pronounced weakness in the Rock Island shares, both common and pre- ferred, when the common stock broke to 41, was followed by the announce- ment that a strong pool had been formed to boom the issues to a higher level. The Moore Bros., Daniel G. Reed, ‘W. B. Leeds and their associates have been handling unsupported the big reorganization and » public confidence. Coloradv Fuel & Iron’s spectacular Stock Exchange exhibitions end-d to- day. President Osgocd, his ally, Mr. Harmon, and Special Master Seymour 1D. Thompson are on the way to Den- ‘ver. _ The Gould-Harriman-Hawley forces will start to-night, and the Denver courts will probably be kept busy til after the result of the meeting known on Dec. 10. It was practically impossible to sell Pool stocks to-day in any quantity. ’ “Whe attempt was made to sell a large block of "Frisco common stock for a "pool, but it declined nearly 2 points ‘@n two small sales, ny “Other pools met with equally dis- pointing results when they tried to 4 ten their ‘commitments without me heavy losses, The pool which been promoting Brooklyn Rapid Transit ~banfoned its work to-day nd decided to let the stock rest on ite own nierits awhile. ( The official Sut-Treasury state- - ment issued this afternoon furnished additional ground for the conspicu- ous Inactivity of all the stocks, _ The statement shows the Sub- ‘Treastiry had gained from the banks _ up to the close of businesy last night $7,404,000, Including the $1,000,000 ex- ported to South America. The hanks ~ fined $492,000 from the interior, thus & net loss to the banks of all money was slightly easier, not- ding this was scttlement day 2 A, aq of loans refinancing scheme and the fact that a pool has been formed will probably strengthen Low. OfmMcials of the United States Sub- Treasury do not agree with Francis C. Moore's statement to the Chamber of Commerce that of the 80,000,000 silver dollars in circulation about 40,000,000 are counterfeit. They regard the statement as too sweeping in its character. Not half of the silver dollars presented at the Sub- ‘Treasury counterfeit. Less than one-quarter are bad. A conservative basis would be a bad dollar in fifty or one hundred good ones, say the officials. “There are many counterfelt silver dol- one of the responsible officia’ of the Sub-Treasury, “but the number in no way approximates the startling basis used by Mr. Moore to clinch his argument against q measure he opposed. “His statement that of 360 silver do lars presented here by a banker, 170 were bad, is no doubt correct. “But {t 1s not, necessarily true—nor Is {tas a matter of fact—that the same proportion holds’good on other trans- actions. “There are stringent laws against counterfeiting, and the United States Government strictly enfostes them, It {s not so easy as Mr. Moore thinks to make a bad silver dollar and then to Bet some one to accept it from you as good. “There need be no alarm over Mr. Moore's figures. “They are not oficial and the real situation has none of the sensational phases he aesumes. “As a matter of fact, I don't belleve one in fifty or one tn a hundred would be too low an estimate. “There {8 an incentive to make coun- terfeit. sllyer dollars because of the profit in them, but the risk in circu- lating them {s too grea: SHIPPING NEWS.
