Victory In Greater New York Has Put Heart pondent, ana a Great Sweep Is! Expected Next Time. ——_ j Tammany Hall shines brightly through | the smoke of the battle of the ballots with her files unbroken and her arms untarnished. She proudly calls the roll of a solid delegation of eleven Repre- sentatives in Congress from the Man- hattan and the Bronx; twelve out of tho thirteen Senators, twenty-nine of the thirty-flye Assemblymen from New York County and three Judges of the} Supreme Court. The “New Tammany," made to be truly the “Democratic organization of New York County,” rolls up a plurality of %,000 for a candidate for Governor whose personality has been declared of- fensive to the organization; and it elect- ed its three nominees for the Supreme Court bench by pluraltties ranging from 46,000 to 68,000, although two of the op- posing candidates were the nominees of three different organizations. But the crowning triumph for the new Tammany and its young leader was best Mlustrated in the confidence it inspired {a the Democracy of the other three boroughs as shown in the unprecedented Vote rolled up for Coler and the whole ticket in the Bronx, Queens and Rich- mond, making the grand total in the city more than 120,000. It means that Tammany, rehabili- tated and its lines re-formed, is prepar- ing for the battle of 1903 to regain Its supremacy in the greater city, and has wheeled the Brooklyn, Queens and Rich- mond Democracy into line on the right end left flank, and through the policy of €ecency and common sense inaugurated by “Smiling Charlie’ Murphy will keep them there, not by coercion, but by the law of self-preservation and the assur- ance of fair treatment and fair leader- ship. Jn short, the election in the greater city has sent Murphy to the front as a y leader as well as Tammany's boss. Murphy showed his appreciation of the necessity of dissuading “independent Democrats” of the bellef that Croker wus still a power in the Hall, and his declaration of independence was his first nove. So, Little Impression Made by “Party” that It Must Now Nominate by Petition. The Greater New York Democracy, led by John C. Sheehan, and having a column on the bajlot with the rooster as the party emblem, nearly reaches the vanishing point ir an analysis of the vote in this county. The test is to be found in the vote for Justices of the Supreme Court, Under the rooster were the names of Alfred Steckier, Justice Keener and John De’ Witt, Warner, The wote cast fer the latter has not yet been com- puted, but by comparing the vote for Keener with that cast for Justice Hall, who was not indorsed by the Sheehan- ites, the actual or approximate strength of the latter can be discovered. Hall got 93,90, Keener's vote, including those cast by the Sheehanites, was 98,- 1%, or 4,166 additional, which represents the vote for the Greater New York De- mocracy. The purpose of the latter party in having a column on the ballot was to show strength. enough to give them a legal , status as an. organized political party entitled to nominate a city and State ticket by convention In future years, But 4,166 1s not enough, and this in the Lately Des-! It was a showing which Justice Stecklor speaks of with pride to-day. It Is conceded that the Republican judiclary ticket suffered from the prevalent disposition to frown upon “interference from Albany with the judiciary,” as exemplified In the dental by the Republicans under Gov. Odell's orders of an indorsement to Judge Gray, of the Court of Appeais, and the forced nomination of John ©. Davies in the Onelda Supreme Court District. Justice Gray was elected despite the triumph of the Republican State ticket, and Davies was defeated by a big ma- Jority in a district usually good for 14,000 Republican majority.
