VOLUME XCII—NO. 158. SAN FRANCISCO, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1902. Call, PRICE FIVE CENTS. PARDEE IS TRI . MPHANT; “AST GOES REPUBLI CAN REPUBLICANS WIN NATIONAL VICTORY + IN the forty-two States where elections were held yesterday Repub- lican candidates secured all the votes estimated for them in recent polls made by The Call. Most noticeable is Governor QOdell’s victory in New York, where he had to overcome a majority of more than 100,000 given to Bird S. Coler, the Democratic candidate, by the Greater City. This gratifying result is due to the stand of the farm- ers, who are satisfied to “let well enough alone.” TVOters of the | Nation Uphold Republican Policies. Big Majorities Are Rolled Up==The Control of Con- gress Retained. Special Dispatch to The Call. EW YORK, Nov. 5—Nearly complete returns show at the American farmer has saved the Republican party in New York State and has probably kept Con- ess in the control of the Republican party. In some of the Oliio cities the Republicans made gains, showing that Johnson’s cir- cus method and fantastic political doctrine had no weight, even with wasses in the centers of population. In Wisconsin the Republicans have won in spite of themselves. The bitter quarrel between Governor Lafollette and Senator S pooner was carried directly to the polls, and the surprising result is that La- has been elected Governor and that the Legislature is Republi- suring Senator Spooner’s return to the Senate, and ten of the cleven Cmg;u:zouul districts have been carried by the Republicans. Legislatures of the Right Complexion. There was a light vote in Illinois, but the Republicans apparent- | I Id their own. Indications are that the Re epublicans wwill have the Legislature, insuring the election of Representative Hopkins to the Senate as the successor of William E. Mason. Indiana remains Republican. The Legislature will be con- trolled by Republicans, and Senator Fairbanks will succeed himself. In the First District, which is mormally Democr, ratic, Rtpresenlatwe Heminway, Republican, has carried it for a third time in the face of vse conditions. There has been heavy Democratic gains in Mas- husetts, but #he Repiblican State ticket has been elected by a fair jority. It is probable that three or four members of Congress 1ave been elected by the Democrats. Maryland, which now has six Republican Representatives,’ has 1T can elecied four Republicans and two Democrats. Dciaware has probably been carried by the -Democrats, - and 3 i THE REPUBLICAN TICKET IS ELECTED | A T 3 o’clock this morning the partial returns show the entire Repub- lican State ticket is elected by pluralities ranging from 3000 to 6000. * Seven Republican and one Union Labor Congressman are elected. The indications are that a majority of the Republican State Senators and Assemblymen are elected. In the local fight for Judges of the | Superior Court three Republican Judges are certain of election, whiie “the issue is close between two Democratic candidates for the same office. — b Republicans of Cali; fornia Elect Entire Ticket. Interior Counties Overcome Lane’s Plurality in San Francisco. MAJORITY of the intelligent voters of California rallied to the support of the administration yesterday by electing Dr. George C. Pardee to be Governor for the next four years. The latest returns place his plu- rality at from 3000 to 6000, and it is likely that these figures may be materially increased when the officidt result is declared. The baitle waged fiercely at all the polls throughout 'the State. Soon-after-the polis tlosed-the-adherents-of both party candidates be= gan to make their ‘forecasts, based upon partial retwrns from scat- tered precincts. The first authentic news received at the State com- mittee headquarters in.this city was to the effect that Sacramento County had given a decisive majority for Lane. The information was received with unfeigned delight by Lane's friends and support- ers, while to the Pardee contingent it was as a wet blanket. Then came the information from Los Angeles that Pardee’s majority was materially decreased and this was accepted as final proof that Lane, backed by a plurality of not less than 12,000 in this city, would sweep the State. The early reports lacked authenticity, however, as later figures proved. Los Angeleswas safe for Pardee with a heavy plurality, and: at r o’clock Pardee’s managers received authentic as- surances that his plurality outside of San Francisco exceeded 15~ 000, thereby rendering his election by a handsome plurality a cer= tainty. Entire Republican State Ticket Elected. In San Francisco Lane polled an exiraordinarily heavy vote.' In the labor districts south of Market streethe had practically a walk- over. The workingmen were out in force in his behalf, as was evi- denced by the large vote cast for him in these districis. That Lane had developed an unexpected strength in Republican precincts his neck-and-neck race amply proved. The remainder of -the Republican State ticket, from Lieutenant Governor to State Printer, seems to have been elected. The main fight was for Governor, many voters preferring to wvote the Republican ticket even though they cast their ballots for Lane. Charles F. Curry is re-elected Secretary of State; E. P. Col- gan, Controller; Truman Reeves, Treasurer; U. S. Webb, Attorney General; Victor H. Woods, Surveyor General; Thomas J. Kirk, Superintendent of Public Instruction; Frank C. *Jordan, Clerk of the Supreme Court; W. W. Shannon, State Printer; W. H. Beatty, Chief Justice, and Frank M. Angellotti and Lucien Shaw, Associate Justices of the Supreme Court. Four Republican Congressmen Are Elected. The latest advices, at 2 o’clock a. m., indicate that four Repub- lican ‘and one Labor Union Congressmen have been elected, with three districts doubtful. The fight between Ford (D.) and Gillette - (R.) in the First District is very close, with the chances in favor of Gillette. In the Second District Bell (D.) and Coombs (R.) are run-~ ning a neck-and-neck race. In the Eighth District Dandels (R.) is far in the lead of Smythe (D.). Metcalf (R.). wins by a large plur- ality in the Third District, while: Kahn is re-elected from the Fourth. Wynn (Labor Union-Demaocrat) is elected from the Fifth District. Necdham (R.) is re-clected from the Sixth and McLachlan (R.) from the Seventh. The partial returns received az an early izour this morning point to the elrcion of a majority of Republican Senators and Assembly- men. > % : [ Houston has been elected to Congress. The Legislature is close, but it is belicved the Democrats will ‘control and eiect two United States Senaiors. The result in West Virginia*is in doubé, and returns are very late. The Republicans claim to have elected all five Representatives, while the Democrats are claiming three of them. ~ In the Far West the Republicans have made gains, and while Colorado has gone Democratic, the majority has becn cut down. Nevada and Utah have elected Republicans to Congress. .
