LEG BROKEN THIS TIME. Second Wagon Is Necessary for the Surgeon Who Hastening Racer to St. Vin- cent’s Hospital. Richard Racer met with two serious accidents In quick succession, and both by street-cars in different sections of the city. First he fell under a car at Bowery and Spring street and his foot was crushed by a wheel. Then he was hurled from the ambu- lance which was taking him to St, Vin- ceat’s Hospital, and the leg to which the cruehed foot was hanging wae broken. The ambulance was struck by a Sixth avenue car. Incidentally Ambulance Burgeon Garl- gan sustained severe bruises and strains to both legs and another ambulance was necessary for him. Racer, who lives at No. 90 Bixth ave- nue, was riding on the front platform of a Spring street horse car when it made the curve into the Bowery. The curve wag sharp and Racer was thrown oft. As he tried to catch nimself his foot went under the car and the front wheel ran over and crushed It. He was dragged out and placed on the sidewalk while the ambulance from St. Vincent's Hospital was coming. Dr. Garlgan, in charge, sald the injury was most serious, that amputation would probabiy be necessary, and he ordered the driver to spged for the operating: room of the hospital. With its gong clanging the ambulance fore up through Spring street to Sixth avenue, and up under the elevated structure at a breakneck speed. ‘The driver was turning out of the tracks at Eleventh street when a south- bound car, heedless-of the gong, crashed into the ambulance. Racer was thrown from the stretcher out through the opening in front of the street, over the driver's head, falling on the pavement many feet from car or ambulance. His crushed foot was now hanging limp, the bone in the leg having been broken by the fall. Fearing that passing wagons would run over him, Racer crawled to the curb, dragging his twice-Injured leg be- hind him. Dr. Garigan was thrown from the pack of the ambulance and fell under the wheel as {t was crushed In, He was cut and bruised in a number of places and was unable to assist himeeif or his patient. He told a policeman to hurry nother ambulance, and then Dr. Gar- igan himself occup!ed a place on the stretcher in the new ambulance with the originally injured man, and both were hurried to the hospital without further incident. “In time of peace prepare for yar’ tt a!
