Eaton, "> | of Hartford, Conn., the oldest living | ehiet of them all, and scores of men equally prominent in the life-saving “and fire extinguishing business. An elaborate programune has been pre- pared for their entertainment, and that they will have a fine time in the ‘Im- portal City is as certain as carte blanche “Mdvance orders can render It FIRE CHIEFS FROM ACROSS THE SEA JOIN - AMERICANS IN CONVENTION OF THE BRAVE. Exhibit Is Tremendous, Po judge cf the magnitude of the ex- » Bfbit at the convention it fs only neces- gary to state that every inch of the 40,000 feet of floor space on the second Moor of the Grand Central Palace has been taken by the 103 exhibitora and the visitors will see everything from the new fire alarm signal apparatus to the Iutest devices for waking the fre laddies and rousing them from thelr beds at 3 ) o'clock in the morning. | Among the exhibits there will be a Rew fire shield to protect the firemen _ from heat and flames, new kinds of wWwinging harness, fire chief's buggies find automobiles, water-proof sults for fire: new nozzles, life-saving nets whicYD ch and do not let the person cau) und, signal systema and the ‘very latest appliances in fire hose and ‘couplings. +, These new inventions will be tried and tested before the chiefs on Wednes- day, when Forty-third and Forty-fourth Btrests will be closed by special order of the municipal authorities to allow the various tests. Among the most interesting of these ew contrivances Will be “the Seagrave patent aerial hook and ladder truck’ and the ‘“Waterous” gasoline fire en- gine, which have recently been adopted by the New York Fire Department. Aerial Hoisting Device. ‘The main feature of this aerial hook- ahd-ladder truck is the hoisting device. This ladder ts raised by the expansion of spiral springs that are encased in steel tubes, the springs being so adjusted fas to about countenance the welght of the ladder, It ts possible for two men ta raise this ladder seventy-five feet In the air in just thirteen seconds | While the truck is moving. The exten- gion ladder fire truck which has been used heretofore in the New York Fire Department requires four men to raise _ the ladder the:same height and taker forty seconds more time. As two men “holst the ladder and run out the ex- } tension the rest of the crew are not éxhausted and are ready for instant ‘eervice. For country service the “Waterous’ Basoline engine has been recommended by many fire chiefs. ‘The advantage of | this engine over the ordinary ones in ‘the burner the engine will throw a one- 4,000 feet of hose, while it takes six minutes for the ordinary engine to av- “Gomplish the same result, From Great Britain. ‘That the convention !s international in Ose is that one minute after lighting | inch stream of water 125 feet through | | Frederick W.
