For a time the town was In a riot- ous state, Non-union men were com- pelled to fiee tor safety. Thos: who were captured were roughly handled. SHENANDOAH, Pa., Aug. 7.—Rev. Charles Edwards, pastor of the Pres- byterian Church, and formerly State President of the Young Men's Bible ' Society, said to-day that young men in his congregation, which is made! up principally of mine workers, have informed him that the foreigners have determined to cut off an ear of every man who returns to work, 60) that they will forever be marked as unfair workmen. Mr. Edwards says his young men are in a position to know, and he be- lieves the story. The foreigners ‘think this is the easiest method for preventing attempts to break the strike, ———_ RIOTERS SHOOT AT STATE TROOPS. (Bpectal to The Evening World.) GOSSIP IN AND ABOUT WALL STREET. Hit at the Goulis. An official announcement by Presi- \dent Loew, of the Baltimore & Ohio, states that on Sept. 1 all relations between the Baltimore & Ohio and tho Western Maryland will terminate. After that date all freight hereto- fore turned over by the B. & O. to the Western Maryland will be dl- verted to the Cumberland Valley Rail- road, ‘This is the latest phase of the war between A, J. Cassatt and George Jay Gould, representing their respective great railway systems, now energetic rivals for business east of Pittsburg. This blow is finan- cially a serious one to the Western Maryland, which the Goulds have just purchased. They plan to get even. o 8 6 Senator W. A. London bulls who are purchasing American securities at prevailing figures are reported as taking out heavy insurances on J. Pierpont Morgan's life. ‘The American finan- leler, who will return to his Wall street bailiwick next week, has more ‘risks dependent upon his physical well-being than any other man in America, It is sald that even in England almost as much life insur- jance is carried upon him as upon King Edward. . . OMcial announcement is made by J. |P. Morgan & Co, that up to this time no action has been taken looking to dividend declaration on Reading first preferred. ‘This 1s additional proof that the voting trust will not be terminated this year, . eo. N.S. Litigation Slow, The slow progress of the litigation in the case of the $400,000,000 North- ern Securities Company is somewhat discouraging to the men who have millions tied up in the Morgan-Hill plan for evolving a transportation trust large enough in its scope to in- clude the whole United States. The case of the State of Minnesota against the combine cannot be finally adjudi- cated for months to come. It will be probably a half year before the de- cision can be expected in this case alone. Litigation in other phases of the fight against the merger may take even longer to settle. eo ee The Cleveland and Pittsburg Railroad has declared the regular quarterly divi- dend of 13-4 per cent. on its guar- anteed stock payable Sept. 1 to stock- holders of record Aug. 10. oe. Reading Awaits Morgan. Reading directors will meet imme- diately after tue arrival of J. P. Mor- gan from Europe, and it will then be officially decided whether the divi- dend on the first preferred stock shall be declared or passed. If the latter action be taken the tenure of the voting trust will be indefinitely continued, the Morgan combination will remain in control and the real ownership of Reading will still be a mystery. It is practically assured now that the dividend will not be de- clared and that the trust will till manage the property. + & ~% The action of the Unton Pacific and Southern Pacific in ordering steel rails abroad is said to be due to the desire of B, H.
